SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,093, dated July 15, 1890.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN OsWIN SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Livingston and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Fastener for Horse-Collars, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to fasteners for the upperends of horse-collar sections, the object being to provide an exceedingly simple and cheap fastener whereby the ends of the sections may be separated to facilitate the introduction of the collar over the headtof the animal and to adapt the fasteners fora ready interlocking and obviate the necessity of straps and buckles for this purpose.

A further object of the invention is to provide for an adjustment of the lock, whereby the collar as a whole is adapted for thenecks of large or small animals.

\Vith these general objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a collar-fastener constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being unlocked. Fig. 2 is a similar View, the sections being locked. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of the clamping-plates.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The fastening device comprises two opposite plates 2 and 3. The plate 2 is formed of cast metal, as is also the plate 3, and each is provided at its adjacent edge with an upturned flange 4:, that of the plate 3 having an opening 5, into which is designed to take 2.

lug 6, projecting from that of the plate 2. The lower meeting edge of the plate 2 is provided with an L-shaped groove 7, and the opposite adjacent edge of the plate 3 with a similar and corresponding rib 8, designed to take into said groove.

9 represents a clasp U-shaped in cross-section and having one end pivoted, as at 10, to the flange at of the plate 3. When the sections are placed together, the U-shaped clasp is of such relative proportion as tobe swung down over the flanges 4, and thus snugly bind them together. A recess 11 is formed in one of the walls of the clasp and through the same projects the extreme end of the lug pro jecting from the plate 2.

The plates 2 and 3 are each slightly curved to agree in contour with the collar-sections, and each plate is provided with a pair of rearwardly-extending securing-plates 12, saidplates being longitudinally slotted, as at 13, and provided upon their upper faces and at each side of their slots with superficial ribs 14. Bolts 15 are inserted upwardly through the collar-sections and through the slot of each securingplate, and over each bolt there is mounted curved binding-plates 15 having aperforation 16 for the reception of the bolt, and having their under surfaces provided with recesses 17, traversing the face of the same, which re cesses are designed to receive the superficial ribs of the slotted plates. A nut 17 X surmounts the binding-plates, and it will be apparent that the interlocking plates may be adjusted at different points upon the bolts 13 by simply loosening the nuts and changing the location of the ribs with the transverse grooves of said plates.

To disconnect the sections for removal or introduction of'the collar, it is simply necessary to swing the clasp upward from its embracing position and withdraw the lug from the opening of the opposite flange. The transverse rib of one interlocking plate taking into the L-shaped groove of the opposite interlocking plate aids the clasp and lug in maintainin g a rigid unyielding connection and any accidental separation.

Having described my invention, what I claim is' The combination, with the collar-sections, 0f the opposite curved plates having their adjacent ends upturned to form interlocking flanges, one of which is provided with an opening and the other with a lug adapted to enter the same, and a U-shaped clasp pivoted at one end to one of the flanges adapted to be swung over the two flanges and provided with recesses for the reception of the lug, substantially as specified.
