ELECTRO-THERAPEUTIC APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,978, dated July 8, 1890.

Be it known that I, ABRAM IV. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county and State of New York,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Electro-Therapeutic Appliances, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speci- 1O fication.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved appliance, and Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in appliances for the cure of varicocele and other altections of the scrotum; and it consists in the arrangement of concave-convex bimetallic (zinc and copper) segments forming an open ring or clasp with adjusting-screws or their equivalents, in combination with an elastic compressing belt or girdle. h
The object of my invention is to compress the exterior or varicose veins and prevent them from beeomin g filled and distended with blood after having been evacuated by manipulation preparatory to the application of this appliance, and also to furnish a continuous current of electricity to slightly stimulate, revive, and invigorate the parts.
0 In the accompanying drawings,A and B denote the two segments or halves of the concavo-convex' bimetallic clasp, which are each provided with lugs C D, having tubular openings through which adjusting screw-rods E 3 5 E are inserted. Surrounding the entire clasp the endless spiral metal spring G extends, located in the concave side of the clasp. This spring has suflicient contractile power to cause the clasp when adjusted in use to pre- 40 vent the emptied varicose veins from refilling while the degree of compression will not prevent the normal circulation of blood in the interior vessels. The buttons 6 serve to attach a pocket or suspensory to support the. testicles. The tubes of the respective lugs C are made with screw-threads or female screws, in which the screw-rods work for the adjustment of the clasp, so as to prevent it from becoming detached from its place around the scrotum. About one half of the length of the screw-rods is plain or smooth, so as to work freely in the smooth tubes of the lugs D, and around the screw-rods at the junction of the threaded and plain portions thereof there is fixed a permanent collar II, which serves to limit the approach of the two segments A 13 toward each other through the action of the spiral spring G. By means of this provision the clasp may be readily adjusted and adapted for use around the parts when of greater or less circumference. The adjusting-screws E may be dispensed with and a detachable screw and nutmay be placed between the lugs, the pointed ends of such screw fitting into the lugs to retain this adj usting device in position.
From the foregoing description it Will be understood that the appliance can be readily used without the assistance of a physician or surgeon, and all the benefits to be derived from its action as a surgical support or device and as a generator of a continuous current of electricity Will be obtained.
