Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS LENHART, OF BROOKFIELD, MISSOURI.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,902, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed February 27, 1890. Serial No. 341,986. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be ,it known that I, CYRUS LENHART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing` at Brookfield, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in car-couplin Os; and it comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a view in perspective of my improved coupler, shown attached to a car, the latter being in dotted lines, with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a view of the coupling-bar. Fig. et is a bottom plan view thereof, showing operating-levers.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the draw-head; d., a lower jaw pivoted at its center on a stud a by a cross-pin d2, and a3 a spring rigidly secured at one end to the drawhead and bearing upon the inner rear end of said jaw.
B is the coupling-bar,the hooked ends of which may be both made with straight sides, as shown at b, or one of said ends may have rounded edges, as shown at ZJ', whereby in the event of the accidental turning over of a car the rounded ends will readily slide over the hooked end of the lower jaw and permit the cars to readily uncouple. The end of this couplingbar upon striking against the outer cnd of a lower jaw will force the same open and enter the chamber b2 of the draw-head, wherein it will be held by the closing of said Jaw.
C is a lever secured to the under side of the ear and extended to the roof thereof. The inner end of this lever has a bent arm d, which bears against the under side of the rear end of jaw a, whereby the latter can be opened to uncouple the cars. In lieu of this lever-alever C may be employed capable of operation from the car-platform. This lever has a bent portion d', which also bears against jaw a. (See Iiig. 4.)
In the draw-head i above chamber b is formed a second chamber c, wherein the connecting-link of an ordinary coupling maybe secured bya pin c', placed in a hole e2. By this means a car provided with my improved coupling can be readily connected with a car having the old form of link-connection.
A car-coupling as thus constructed is extremely simple, cheap, and durable, and as it comprises but few parts will not readily get out of order or become deranged.
I claim as my inventionl. In a car-coupling, the draw-head having a lower chamber b3, a jaw a, an upper chamber e, and a pin c, substantially as set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head having a chamber Ui iu its lower portiongthe jaw fulcrumed to said draw-head and having a forward hooked end, a spring bearing on the rear end of said jaw, and the lever C, secured to the car and bearin against the under side of the rear end of said jaw, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CYRUS LENI-IAR'I.
