J. KINNEY.
BED WARMER. l No. 431,813. Patented July 8, 1890.
. --IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHlllIIIIIIIVI Y Ewen-Zur.' Jsse @any NI'TE STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE KINNEY, OF ST. THOMAS, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BED-WARM ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,813, dated .T uly 8, 1890.
Application tiled December 7, 1887. Renewed April l0, 1890. Serial No. 347,406. (No model.) Patented in Canada May 9, 1887I .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE KINNEY, of the city of St. Thomas, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-farmers (for which I have received Letters Patent in Canada, No. 26,669, dated May 9, 1887,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices that are adapted to be heated and applied to warm beds; and my improvement thereon consists in certain features of construction that adapt this class of devices to be heated over a lamp or gas-jet, and also in giving to them a form that adapts them to be applied to the beds of invalids where the local use of warm fomentations are desired, and as will be more fully set forth hereinafter in connection with its illustration.
In the accompanying` drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 shows a side edge elevation of my improved bed-warmer as applied to be heated by a lamp. Fig. 2 shows the saine device as applied to be heated with a gas-jet. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the device. Fig. 4t is a section of the device, taken on the line as fr of Fig. 3.
The several parts of the device are designated by letter-reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:
The letter W designates my improved bedwariner, and S S2 its dish-form sides, that are joined at their edges e to produce the inclosure E.
The letter D designates a diaphragm-plate arranged within said chamber E so as to divide it laterally in two parts.
The letter I-I designates the handle of the device.
The side Szof the device is constructed with a centrally-arranged opening O.
The letters O designate clips, which are struck up from the metal of the sides S2, and are arranged in a plane below the edge of the opening O, and project radially and inwardly toward the center of the opening. The function of these clips is to support the device over a lamp-chimney.
The letters p p designate passages made in the bottom S2, and p2 p2 passages made in the diaphragm-plate D. A central opening O2 is made in the diaphragm adjacent to the clip, through which the heated air passes. These passages are thus made and arranged for the movement of the heated currents through the device while the same is being heated for use. The diaphragm serves as a spreader for the heat and retains alarge p0rtion of the saine in the space above.
As the clips C are arranged to adapt th device to be placed on over a lamp-chimney top, yet the device may be made without them, provided the central passage O and the heat-circulating apertures p', made in the same plate, are retained.
The convex sides of the device, united as above described, permit of its being easily moved between the bed-coverings.
As thus made and with the form shown the device when heated may be applied to warm the interior of a bed, or to locally appl y heat when the effect of warm fomentations is desired in the treatment 0f disease.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A bed-Warming device having the conveXly-arranged and connected dish-form sides S' and S2, the latter being constructed with the opening O and apertures p', the perforated diaphragm-plate D, arranged laterally within and across the inclosure formed by said plates, and the handle I-I, projected from the side edge of the connected dish-form plates, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A bed-warming device having the convexly-arranged and connected dish-form sides S and S2, the latter being constructed with the opening O, clips C, and passages p', the perforated diaphragm-plate D, arranged laterally within and across the inclosure formed by said plates, and provided with apertures p2, and the handle H, projected from the side edges of the connected dish-form plates, substantially in the manner, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed at Troy, New York, this 17th day of November, 1887, and in the presence of the two witnesses whose names are hereto written.
JESSE KINNEY.
