JOHN S. WVILLIAMS, 0F BROOKLYN, NEVVYORK.
PETROLEUM-OIL AND GAS STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,864, dated October 4, 1881.
- Application filed MarchB l, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN S. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have, invented anew and useful Improvement in Petroleum-Oil and Gas Stoves, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of myrinvention is to produce a petroleum-oil stove, or an attachment for petroleum-oil stoves, which shall be especially adapted to warm the rooms of houses and for heating purposes generally, and whereby a greater and more intense heat is produced, and the products of combustion are moreperfectly consumed. than in the petroleum oil stoves now used, and whereby all smoking of the burners and odor of the oil is done away with. My improvement may also be used as an attachment for gas-stoves as well as oilstoves.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a central vertical section of my improvement; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same.
A is the oil-reservoir provided with any desired number of burners, b. Above the reservoir A is the plate or ring a, provided with feet 0, which rest on the reservoirAand raise the ring or plate a above said reservoir.
Fitting on or over the plate or ring a is'the heating and illuminating chamber B, which is preferably formed in the shape of a double cone, and preferably provided in its upper part with sheets of mica or other proper transparent material.
Secured to the chamber B is the inner drum, 0, which is provided with two cones or deflecting-plates, D and E. The lower cone, D, may either be secured to the inner drum, (J, or may be attached to the heating-chamberB at its upper part. Within this inner drum, 0, is also the flaring cylinder F, which narrows from the point where it meets, or is attached to the cone E to its top, and is formed there into notches or teethf. The inner drum,0,'is provided with holes or openingsgaroundits sides.
Fitting to the upper part of theinner drum, 0, and over the flaring cylinder F, is the cap G, which is provided with the holes or openings h. The outside drum, H, fits over the inner drum, 0, and is open at its top, so that the cap G will pass through it.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: The 'cold air enters at the lower part of through the flaring cylinder F, and thence out of the openingg of the inner drum, 0, into the annular passage between the inner drum, 0, and outer drum, H, and thence up through the said annular passage and out of the holes or openings h of the cap G into the room or apartment to be warmed. The cold air from the room also enters the lower part of the drum H, and is warmed while passing through the annular passage between the inner drum, 0, and outer drum, H, and thence passes out of the holes or openings h of cap G.
A removable urn provided with openings may be placed on'the stove above the cap G; or, if desired, the'opening above the cap G may be covered by a plate or other suitable means, and the heat thus deflected will pass down the inner drum, 0, and outer drum, H, and out of the space between the lower part of the drum H and drum 0, and the heat thus caused to warm the floor and lower part of the apartment or room.
My said invention is designed to be and is an improvement on Letters Patent No.206,204
of the United States, issued to me July 23,
1878, for petroleum-stoves.
When my improvement is to be used for burning gas the oil-reservoir A with it arches is removed and a cylinder with base is substituted, and a suitable connection is made with the gas-pipe. This arrangement permits the air to pass under the bottom of the base, thereby causing a circulation of cold air.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
1.' Theinner drum, 0, provided with the holes and openings 9, deflecting plate or cone E, and flaring cylinder F, provided with notches or teeth f, in combination with the outer cylinder, H, and the perforated cap Gr, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. Theinnerdrum,O,providedwith theholes 5 g, and flaring cylinder F, provided with notches or teeth f, both the drum and cylinder being provided with a top plate or cover, in combination with the deflector E and the outer cylinder, H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the cap G, provided with the openings h and outer drum, H.
4. In combination with a gas or lamp stove, the inner drum, 0, having openings 9, the per- 15 forated cap G, the flaring cylinder F, having openingsf, the outer cylinder, H, and the deflecting cones D and E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. The combination of thelatnp or gas stove A, heating-chamber B, outer drum, H, inner 2o drum, 0, having holes g, cap G, having holes h, flaring cylinder F, having openings or teeth f, and deflecting cones D and E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my 2 5 hand this 23d day of March, 1881.
JOHN S. WILLIAMS.
In presence of-- CHARLES G. (Joe, Louis W. Fnosr.
