GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,806, dated July 8, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS N. EMERY, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine,
5 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grates Applicable to Ranges and other Heaters and Means for Operating the Same, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters indicate similar parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a grate which shall be readily and easily operated and secure the uniform clearing of the fire in the process of shaking or dumping. To this end I construct my grate in three parts, consisting of two end sections and a central section, the three acting as a single grate in the support of the fire and operating :0 conjointly in the process of shaking, while in the process of dumping the central section acts independent of the end sections.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view with one of the elevated grate- -5 frame ends removed. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical section on the line '2) 10, Fig. 1, but so broken as to show the trunnions of the grate entire. Fig. 3 is a side view with part of the grate-frame and range-body broken away and o the grate drawn forward. Fig. is a partial top View with the grate drawn or pushed back and showing by the dotted lines the shifting of the grate in the operation of shaking. The construction and operation of my imimproved grate and frame are described as follows:
0 My grate-frame difiers from ordinar Y grateframes in having the ends arched or in having elevated end plates attached, the ends being arched or elevated above the plane of the frame and grate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These end elevations are designed to support the end liningbrick and allow of the free movement of the grate-sections H H upon the plane of the frame and beneath the lining, as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The grate-frame is provided with a depending eye or slot J, as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The center grate-section D is longitudinally shorter than the frame, its length being about two-thirds that of the grate-frame, the end sections occupying nearly all of the remaining gratespace, the three extending the length of the fire-pot. The center grate-section is provided with trunnions E and F, having bearings K K in the frame orequivalent support in the rangebody. These trunnions carry collars m m, as and .for the purpose hereinafter set forth. On the lower side of the center grate-section is a pintle P and a lip T. On this pintle is secured a lever B, one end of which rests in the depending eye J, the other end being formed to receive ahandle for use in operating the lever. On this lever is a tongue S, which engages with the lip T on the center grate. The depending eye serves as a fulcrum for the lever when the lever is used as a shaker. It also serves as a bearing for the lever, the lever not only acting as a shaker, but also as a support for the center grate. The lip, in connection with the tongue S, serves to secure the close attachment of the lever to the grate when the grate is tipped and its uniform movement when used as a shaker. The end sections H H are provided with slots 0 0. 0 0 in the bars. These slots or notches fit upon and engage with the collars m m. These end sections rest upon the frame 13, and when in position are oscillated by the transverse movement of the center grate-section, the collars and slots or notches together securing the connection of the several gratesections and their uniform vibration when moved transversely.
Although the collared trunnions are deemed the most advantageous mode of securing the connection of the several grate-sections and their conjoint movement When shaken, I do not Wish to confine myself to this single mode or device to secure the conjoint action of the several grate-sections, as equivalent devices to this end are obviously suggested.
The elevated ends or end plates of the grate-frame, hereinbefore noted, not only alloW ofthe free lateral movement of the grate beneath the lining, but also prevent the falling of the fire or the clogging of the grate at the ends When an extended lateral movement is communicated to the grate in shaking, the grate-sections being at all times covered (protected) by the arched ends or plates of the frame. The end. sections, being elevated above the center grate-section, secure the uniform clearance of the fire in the process of shaking, as they move the body of the fire from the ends to ward the center, thus facilitating the uniform clearance of the grate.
My improved grate may be shaken or dumped by the application of a suitable handle to either the lever R or the trunnion E. 'lhus duplicate means for shaking or dump ing are provided.
Although the central grate-section is shown as eccentrically journaled, this construction is not claimed as any part of my invention, a centrally-journaled grate being equally eftective.
In the accompanying drawings my invention is shown only in connection with a rectangular grate and frame. It Will be understood that the same principle maybe applied to circular grates-namely, a three-part circular grate-working jointly or severally, as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
I do not broadly claim as my invention a grate consisting of three parts or sections, as three-part grates are in common use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A three-part grate consisting of two elevated end sect-ions H H, supported by and movable transversely upon a frame B, having arched ends 0 O, in combination with a een tral section D, supported on trunnions E F, said trunnions having collars m an engaging With notches 0 0 0 0 in the end sections for the purpose of securing the conjoint movement of the several sections in the process of shaking, said collars moving freely in said notches to allow of the free movement of the central section in the process of dumping, substantially as shown, and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the grate-frame B, of the central grate-section D, having trunnions E and F, carrying rings on 'm, and end grate-sections H H, having slots or notches o 0 0 0, all arranged and operated substantially as shown and described.
In a three-part grate, a central section supported by trunnions and having a pintle carrying a lever, in combination with two end sections, and a grateframe having arched ends and a depending eye, substantially as shown, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. A grate consisting of a frame B, having elevated ends 0 C, and a depending eye j, in combination with two end grate-sections H H, having notches o o 0 0, said sections resting and moving upon said frame, and a central grate-section I), having trunnions E and F, said trunnions having collars m m, which engage With notches o 0 0 0 in the end sections, and a pintle 19, carrying a lever B, fulcrumed in the depending eye j, in combination, as and for the purposes specified.
5. In a grate, the combination, With a frame having elevated ends, of tWo end grate-sections having notches and resting and moving horizontally upon said frame, With a central grate-section having collared trunnions engaging With the notches in said end sections in the operation of shaking and moving freely in the notches of the sections in the operation of dumping, asherein setforth and described.
