MACHINE FOR FORMING METALLIC BRAKE-BEAMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,545, dated July 8, 1890. Application filed May 8, 1890- serial No. 351,010. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD W. BAYLEY, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Pittsburg,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented ordiscovered a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Forming Metallic Brake-Beams, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of trussed metallic brake-beams composed of a main body-piece, a double-inclined truss-bar, and a king post or strut; and its object is to provide simple and effective means for bringing the body and truss-bar into proper form and relation for the operations of connecting their ends by welding and forming journals thereon, a machine for mechanically effecting such operations, which constitute the final steps in the manufacture of the beam, being set forth in Letters Patent of the United States No. 426,099, granted and issued to me under date of April 22, 1890, in connection with which machine or with ordinary hand welding and forging my present invention is I designed as a preliminary appliance.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a machine for forming metallic brake-beams embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side view in elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a plan view of the major portion of a brake-beam as formed by the machine, and Fig. 4 an end View of the same.
In the practice of my invention I provide a substantial bed or base 1, on the top of which is fitted a horizontal plate or table 2, which is provided with a downwardly-projecting flange 3 around its edges fitting against the adjacent surfaces of the base in order to prevent the accidental displacement of the table therefrom, while admitting ofits ready removal whenever desired. A fluid-pressure cylinder 4, provided with a properly-packed piston 5, secured upon a rod v6, and with pipes 7 and 8 for the admission and exhaust of fluid under pressure to and from opposite sides of the piston, is secured centrally upon the table 2 adjacent to one of its ends, and a transverse abutment 9 is firmly bolted to the opposite end of the table. A shaping-die 11, secured to the outer end of the piston-rod 6, is fitted to slide on lateral guide-faces 12 on the table 2 toward and from the abutment 9, its traverse in the direction of the cylinder 4 being.

The outer or working face of the die 11 is outwardly inclined in opposite directions from the axial line of the piston-rod in. correspondence with the inclination which is desired to be imparted to the truss-bar a of the brake-beam, and the adjacent face of the abutment 9 is slightly curved in accordance with the curvature desired for the body I). Offsets or depressions 14 are also formed in the face of the shaping-die at and near its ends for a purpose to be presently described. A laterally-adjustable end stop 16, for the truss-bar a, is connected to one side of the shaping-die 11, and a similar end stop 17, for the body-b, is connected to the same side of the abutment 9. A former or pattern-block l8,having a central recess to admit the king post or strut e of a brake-beam and having-its-opposite vertical faces bentand offsetted and curved, respectively, in correspondence with the adjacent faces of the shaping-dieand abutment, is supported, with the capacity of acomparatively limited degree of longitudinal traverse, upon guides 19 on the table 2, resting normallyv at a sufficient distance from the abutment 9 to permit of the insertionof the brake-beam body I). The former 18 is downwardly prolonged on opposite sides of its center line, so as to fit between the guides 19, and a sleeve or tubular guide 20 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2) isbolted to its downward prolongation. Openings 24 are formed in the table 2 near the ends of the former 18, said openings being located above inclined discharge-passages in'the base, through which scale that may be removed from the surfaces of the truss rod and body in theforming op eration drops into suitable. receptacles; A rod or stem 21, having endabutments, either or both of which may be in the form of adjusting-nuts 22, passes freely through said sleeve and through a sleeve 23 fixed on the trated, as it forms no part of -my present invention.
In operation the truss-bar a and body b of the brake-beam, having been brought to a proper heat,are passed through the eyes of the king post or strut e, and these members are placed upon the machine, the king-post resting in the central recess of the former 18 and the trussbar and body abutting at one end against the stops 16 and 17, respectively. Fluid under pressure is then admitted through the pipe 8 to the cylinder 4, and acting upon the piston 5 thereof forces the same and the connected shaping-die 11 toward the abutment 9, the shaping-die 11 in its traverse bending the truss bar and body upon the former 18 into conformity with the vertical faces thereof, so that at the termination of the stroke of thepiston the members of the brake-beam are formed into the shape and relation shown in Fig. 3, under which conditions they are in readiness to be subjected to l the welding and end-journal forging operations requisite to complete the beam. 3. The combination of a plate or table, a fluid-pressure cylinder and an abutment connected thereto at or near its opposite ends, a shaping-die fixed to the piston-rod of the cylinder and having its working-face oppositely inclined from the axial line thereof, a former having a face inclined correspondingly with that of the shaping-die and a central recess in line with the piston-rod, and a rod or stem provided with end abutment-s and passing freely through the shaping-die and former below the table, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a plate or table, a fluid-pressure cylinder and an abutment connected thereto at or near its opposite ends, a shaping-die fixed to the piston-rod of the cylinder and having its working-faceoppositely inclined to the axial line thereof and provided with offsets or depressions near its ends and a former having a face inclined and offsetted correspondingly with that of the shappiston-rod, said former being fitted with the capacity of longitudinal movement upon the and a central recess in line therewith, said upon the table, and an abutment fixed to the table and having a vertical face opposite to and curved correspondingly with the curved face of the former, substantially as set forth.
