JOHN WILLIG, OF HARRIS, MINNESOTA.
SLElGH-RUNNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,501, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed January 14, 1890. Serial No. 336,892- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN WILLIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harris, in the county of Chisago and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleigh-Runners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to sleigh-runners, and has particular relation to those parts which are used to fasten the bolster and runners together and to the means for strengthening the nose of the said runners.
The object of the invention is to simplify, cheapen, and increase the strength of sleighrunners as generally constructed; and to these ends the improvement consists in the novel features, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a runner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view, parts being broken away, of the runner. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper bolsteroasting. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lower bolster-casting. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a crosssection on the line Y Y of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a perspective view, parts being broken away, of a modification.
The runner A is made of wood, the lower front corner being rounded off and theupper edge curved down in the rear of the front end to form the nose a, which is re-enforced or strengthened by the curved iron B, which embraces the top and the two sides of the runner, being secured thereon by suitable fastening devices, as rivets b, which pass through the sides of the iron B and through the runner. The iron is closed in front of the runner and has opening I) to aiford means of attachment for the draft devices. It will be observed that the nose 0. does not extend above the upper edge of the runner; hence the runner can be cut from pieces of timber having their top and bottom edges parallel. However, the iron B extends up the required distance to give the proper curve to the front end of the runners.
The bolster 0, designed to support the sleighbody and connect the runners, is provided with the top and bottom castings D and E, respectively, which are placed directly opposite each other and are secured to the bolster by suitable fastening devices, as the bolts F. The upper casting D has side flanges d d, which embrace the sides of the bolster, and which have a pair of ears (1 projecting laterally therefrom, and has parallel ribs 035 on its top side arranged at right angles to the side flanges d d. The lower castingE has side flanges e to embrace the sides of the bolster and outwardly-flaring end flanges e to embrace the ends of the lower exterior at the end of the bolster, as shown. The side flanges e have a pair of lateral ears 6 which correspond with the cars 01' on casting D. The stakes or bolts G are placed in the space between the pair of ears (1 and c and their lower ends are inserted in the runners, while their upper ends are passed through openings in the inverted- U brace H, which is secured at its ends to the runner on each side of the bolster and which rests between its ends on the top casting D, between the ribs d which latter hold the said inverted-U brace H in a fixed relative position. The runner is strengthened opposite the bolster by the clip I, which also prevents the runner from splitting. It will be understood that the opposite end of the bolster will be secured to the runner in precisely the same way as that above described, and which is shown in the drawings. Obviously, if there be two or more bolsters each will be secured to the runners, ashereinbefore specified.
In the modifications shown in Fig. 7 the upper and the lower castings D and E are constructed without lateral ears and the stakes or bolts G are dispensed with and are replaced by a single bolt J, which passes through and 1. The combination, with a sleigh-runner cut from a strip of Wood, the front end being out on its top and bottom side to obtain a curved nose, of a single curved iron embracing the top and the two sides of the nose and secured thereto, said iron being closed in front of the nose, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the runner and the bolster, of the top casting secured to the bolster, having lateral ears, the inverted-U brace, and the fastenings on each side of the bolster held between the said ears and secured at their ends in the runner, and the brace, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the runner and the bolster, of the inverted-U brace, the lower casting having side and end flanges and lateral ears and the stays placed between the ears and held at their ends in the runner and the said brace, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the runner and.
