As it might not be desirable, in view of the accumulated pressure in chamber D, and for reasons hereinbefore alluded to, to operate both pumps at once, I have arranged it so that the engineer can stop one of them. This I do by putting a sleeve 9 on one end of the rock-shaft, which is loose on said shaft, and Which has the arm I) (which would otherwise be secured to the corresponding end of the rock-shaft) projecting from it. This sleeve is preferably journaled in the adjacent bearing and has its inner end serrated, so as to form a counterpart for the clutch H, which, by means of a suitable feather is permitted to move longitudinally, but which rocks with said rock-shaft. The clutch has a circumferential groove in its body, into which the inwardly-turned extremities of the forks or bifurcations of the end of .a bell-crank h enter, and the lateral arm of this bell-crank has connected to its end a rod 70, which runs back to the cab and can be manipulated by the engineer. The pump itself may consist of an ordinary cylinder with a piston having a piston-head with a valve in it, which on its downward stroke forces the air out frombet'ore it into the chamberD and draws in the air back of it. I prefer, however, to use the pumps for which I applied for Letters Patent December 26, 1888, Serial No. 279,597. I simply connect the connecting-rods a a to the upper walking-beam of the pump, as shown in the drawings.
The air-brakes and whistle can be operated by supplies of air under pressure from the chamber D as well as by the present system.
Cold air' could be used and the fire in the fire-box dispensed with by adopting some means to operate the pumps and maintain the pressure in the boiler whenever the 1000- motive is at a standstill.
It is apparent that the coil G could be dispensed with, and such heat as was imparted to the air in the boiler by the heated gases of combustion passing through the flues in transit from the fire-box to the smoke-arch alone be depended upon. In this event the chamber D as a cold-air reservoir would be useless, because the air could be pumped direct into the boiler.
If it should be desired to use steam and air together, this could be easily done and would result not only in an economy of fuel, but the volume of steam necessary would be greatly reduced. Should it be desired to utilize the air only in case of accident, or because of the water or fuel supplies giving out, my invention would be a great auxiliary to the present use of steam.
The system of feeding compressed air and reutilizing the exhaust of engines in generating a motive power could be used in heating apparatus of buildings, whether hot air, steam, or water be used. use set forth, however.
What I claim as new is 1. The combination, in a locomotive, with the boiler and fire-box, of the pumps E E, rock-shaft 0, links d, eccentrics e, and axle H of the forward drive-wheel, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a locomotive, with the boiler, fire-box, and compressed-air chamber, of the pumps E, rock-shaft c, sleeve g, having its inner end serrated, clutch H, link d, and eccentric c on the axle H of the forward drive-wheel, as set fort-h.
