To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, CAMPBELL E. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county ofHillsborough and air compressor for supplying supplementary pressure, and has for its object the provision ot a novel form of superheater whereby the steam alone, or steam and compressed air, or compressed air alone maybe additionally heated to secure the maximum pressure, and whereby all the energy of the heat within the locomotive may be utilized.
Other objects and advantages such as the enlarged space around my improved superheater, novel means of transmitting the air and steam, simplicity, durability, cheapness in manufacture, and the general improvement of the art will be more fully brought out in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate the like parts in the several views thereof, the numeral 1 designates a locomotive which is of the usual construction comprising a cab 2, a fire box 3, a boiler i, and boiler fines 5.
My improved super-heater 6 comprising a reservoir 7 and a funnel shaped flue portion 8 is secured to the boiler of a locomotive in place of the usual smoke box and superheater. An exhaust chamber 9 is also formed within the reservoir 7 and communicates with the flue portion 8. An exhaust nozzle 10 is formed within the exhaust chamber 9 and communicates with the cylinders of the locomotive. The exhaust chamber 9 has a manhole formed therein closed by a cover 11 having ground air tight joints 12. Steam is received from, the boiler Specification of Letters Patent;

into the superheater when necessary through a pipe 13 entering at the bottom of the super-heater reservoir, and compressed air is received through the pipe 1% from 'a compressor 15 of any well-known or preferred type, the pipe 14: entering adjacent the front portion of the reservoir 7.
The compressed air or steam enters the cylinders through a throttle-valve 16 to be described and then through the Y head 17 and through the pipes 18 on each side of the superheater to the cylinders. Access is had to the super-heater or any of the parts with-- in it through a door 20 having air tight joints 21.
The throttle-valve 16 comprises a casing or cylinder 22 a rotary valve 23 having a groove 2% therein to connect with the port 25 in the Y head 17 to permit the passage of the steam or air to the cylinders of a locomotive. The throttle val e 16 is operated by a bell crank 26 keyed to the rotary valve 23. with the engine cab by a rod 27 having an operating handle 28.
The tender 29 of the engine when constructed according to my invention becomes tachably and flexibly connected as at 30.
The tender 29 has a fuel portion 31 and carries the. air compressor 15, which may convenientlybe operated by a steam turbine 32 which receives steam from the engine boiler through a pipe 33 The compressed air is of course stored in a suitable tank 34.- with which the pipe 14: communicates through a reducing valve 35.
The pipes 33 and 14 have the usual flexible joints between the locomotive and tender to allow for movement in any direction caused by travel.
The operation of the device is as follows: The steam from the boiler is admitted through the pipe 13 to the superheater 6, where it is additionally heated and expanded, and whence it passes through the throttle valve 16 and into the engine cylinders through the pipes 18. The compressed air passes from the tank 34: through the pipe 14 into the superheater and eventually into the engine cylinders in the same manner as the steam. The steam alone, the compressed air alone, or both steam and air mixed may be supplied optionally to the superheater as various emergencies may render necessary. The bell crank 26 is connected cylinders passes through the nozzle 10 into the chamber 9 and out into the atmosphere, producing the requisite draft on the fire in the fire-box oi the engine.
i From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a novel and ethcient form of device whereby steam, compressed air, or steam and air may be additionally heated and expanded for supplying the maximum degree of pressure to the cylinders of a locomotive.
It will be readily understood that I may make such changes in the form. construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit ot' the invention and such as will be within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a compressed air locomotive, a superheater comprising a funnel shaped heat unit through which the products of combustion pass from said locomotive, a chamber surrounding said unit, and means for allowing the passage of compressed air and steam into saidchamber and other means for allowing the passage of said air and steam into the cylinders ofsaid locomotive.
2, in a locomotive, a superheater comprising a funnel shaped heat unit through which the products of combustion pass, achamber surrounding said unit, and means for allowing the passage of compressed air and steam into said chamber, other means for allowing the pas age of said air and steam into the cylinders of said locomotive, and means for controlling said last named passage.
3. In a locomotive, a superheater comprising a funnel shaped heat unit, a chamber surrounding said unit, and means for allowing the passage of compressed air and steam into said chamber, other means for allowing the passage of said air and steam into the cylinders of said locomotive, and means for controlling said last named passage, said means comprising a throttle valve located at the rear of said superheater and adapted to be operated from the locomotive cab.
In combination with a combined steam and compressed air locomotive, a superheater comprising a flue extending over the ends of and coaxially with the boiler tubes, an outlet stack communicating with said due and with the atmosphere, a heating chamber surrounding said flue and said stack and having selective valved communication with a steam supply and a compressed air supply, and valve controlled outlet means communicating with said chamber and with the engine cylinders.
5. in combination with a combined steam and compressed air locomotive, a superheater comprising a due extending over the ends of and coaxially'with the boiler tubes, an outlet stack communicating with said fine and with the atmosphere, a heating chamber surrounding said flue and said stack and having selective 'a lved communication with a steam supply and a compressed air supply, valve controlled outlet moans communicating with said chamber and with the engine cylinders, and a draft producing discharge nozzle within said outlet stack communicating with the exhaust of the engine cylinders and terminating adjacent the point of entry of said flue into said stack.
