SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,149, dated July 1, 1890.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH PARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cracker-lllaohines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention relates, generally, to ma- [0 chines for making crackers or similar articles,
and more especially to that class of such machines known as matzoth-machines, havin g for their object the production of matzoths or crackers of unleavened bread; and the object of this invention is to simplify and improve the construction and to increase the efficiency of such machines.
My invention consists, essentially, in the use of a large roller or drum and a separate 2o cutting-roller and docking-roller, and sometimes a flattening-roller, these operating-rollers being arranged about the drum, so that the drum continuously feeds and supports the dough while it is being separately and successively operated upon by such rollers,

I The parts of the machine are supported by a suitable frame-work composed of the side frames a c, joined by tie-bars a a. The feeding and supporting cylinder or drum 1) rotates in bearings in the side frames at a. and is driven by suitable gearing, to be hereinafter described. A feed-board 0, provided with guides c c, is placed across the machine at the front end thereof, being supported by brackets c extending from the frame, and the rear end of this feed-board c fits close to the surface of the feeding and supporting drum 1). The dough to be shaped into matzoths is placed upon or fed to this feed-board c and passes from the feed-board onto the feeding and supporting drum Z), by which it 1s carried under the various operating devices and through the machine.
The flattening, docking, and cutting rollers arearranged about the feeding and supporting drum 1), so as to operate upon the strip of dough carried by the drum. The Iiatteningroller cl is fitted to rotate in bearing-blocks held in guides in the side frames a a, and these bearing-blocks can be adjusted in the guides bymanipulating the adj usting-screws (1, bearing against the upper faces of the blocks, and the adj Listing-screws (Z bearing against the lower faces of the bearing-blocks, and will be firmly held by these adjustingscrews in desired position. Thus the flattening-roller d can be nicely adjusted to re ulate the opening between its peripherv a nd that of the feeding and supporting drum, and can be securely held in any desired position and is thus enabled to uniformly roll out and flatten the strip of dough to any desired thickness. Flanges d are provided at each end of the flattening-roller (Z, the inner sides of which bear against the ends of the feediu and supporting drum b, and prevent the lat eral spreading out of the dough beyond the roller, or the escape of the dough while the dough is being rolled out or flattened. Such lateral spreading is also prevented while on the feed-board by the side guides c, the ends of which fit against the flanges (Z A stripper c is provided, which bears against the under surface of the flattening-roller (Z, to strip the dough from the roller if it adheres thereto. The docking-roller is composed of a central rod or shaft f, upon which the disks f provided with docking teeth or points on their peripheries, are held. IVashers are placed between the disks f to separate them and they are clamped together and against a shoulder near-one end of the rod f by a nut f near the other end of the rod f. This dockin roller f f rotates in bearing-blocks held i n guides in the side frames a a, and these bearing-blocks can be adjusted in the guides and the distance of the doeking-points from the periphery of the feedingand supporting drum regulated by inserting blocks of different thicknesses between the lower faces of the to deposit the matzoths in pans.
bearing-blocks and the frame and manipulating the adj Listing-screws f A stripper g is provided for the docking-roller, having a series of fingers passing in between the circular sets of dockingpoints on the disks f. This stripper prevents the dough from adhering to the disks.
The cutting-roller shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 5 is for cutting circular matzoths. Sometimes square matzoths are desired, and then the cutting-roller shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8 is used. The circular-matzoth-cutting roller is composed of the plain roller h, upon which are mounted the cutting-knives i, which are shaped to cut the matzoths so that they will be in circular form when finished, some allowance being made for shrinkage in the direction of the length of the strip of dough. Six of these knives or cutters are shown on the roller h. A stripper 'L, mounted on a stud and held outward by a spring, is provided at the front part of each cutter, or the part of the cutter which first cuts the dough. These strippers are pushed slightly inward when they come in contact with the dough, and thus exert a gentle pressure thereon, effectually preventing the dough from adhering to the knives. The squarematzoth cutting roller consists of the rod or shaft j, on which are mounted the transversely-cuttin g knives k k and the longitudinally-cutting knife This cutter makes one continuous central longitudinal cut and transverse cuts at equal intervals in the strip of dough, thus dividing the strip into square or rectangular matzoths. No stripper is necessary with this cutterroller 70 7c.
When either cutting-roller is in the ma chine, it is mounted in boxes fitting in guides in the machine, and these boxes are adj ustable by means of adjusting-screws 2' and removable blocks placed beneath the boxes. The guides are so constructed that either cutting-roller can be held therein.
The matzoths, after passing under the cutting-roller, are ready for the baking operation, it being only necessary to make pro- Vision for removing the waste from the matzoths when the circular matzoths are cut and This is accomplished by a receiving-apron Z, carried on rollers m m, mounted in an extension as of the frame, the outer roller m being adj ustable to keep the apron taut. The apron Z is preferably made of sheet-brass, but any suitable material can be used. An inclined stripper or deflectorn is provided, one edge fitting against the feeding and supporting drum 1) and the other edge terminating overthe apron l, whereby the matzoths are guided from the feeding and supporting drum Z) to the apron Z.
Motion is imparted to the machine at the fly-wheel 0, which is provided with a handle for driving directly by hand, or which may be rotated by a belt passing around it and connected to a suitable source of'power. A pinion o is secured to the fly-wheel 0, or to its shaft 0 and meshes with a gear-wheel 0 secured on one end of the shaft of the flattening-roller (l. On the other end of this shaft is secured the gear-wheel (P, which meshes with the large gear-Wheel 19', secured on the shaft of the feeding and supporting drum 1). Motion is imparted to the docking-roller from the gear-wheel b by means of the gear-wheel f on the shaft of the docking-roller meshing into the wheel 1), and from the gear-wheel b to the cutting-roller by means of the gearwheel 72. on the shaft of the cutting-roller also meshing into the wheel I). The pitch diameter of the gear-wheel 1) corresponds with the diameter of the feeding and supporting drum, and the pitch diameter of the gear-wheel h on the end of the cutting-roller shaft equals the outer diameter of the cuttingroller. It is therefore only necessary when the square-matzoth cutter shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is used in the machine to provide on its shaft a gear-wheel adapted to mesh into the wheel I), and of the same pitch diameter as the cutting-roller. The apron Z is driven by means of the chain Z, running over a sprocketwheel 12 on the shaft of the feeding and supporting drum 1), and a sprocket-wheel Z on the shaft of the apron-carrying roller 1%. v
In the modification shown in Fig. 8 two flattening-rollers d and d are shown arranged one above the other, a fixed table or support d guiding the dough from these rollers to the feeding and supporting drum 1), about which drum 1) are arranged the docking-roller f f and the cutting-roller. The square-matzoth cutter 7c is is shown in place in the machine. The connecting-gears are shown by dotted lines. The driving-pulley 0 has secured to it or its shaft the pinion o, meshing into the idle-wheel 0 which meshes into the wheel 0 on the shaft of the lower flattening-roller d. A smaller wheel on this shaft (1 meshes into idle-wheel 0 which meshes into wheel I) on the shaft of feeding and supporting drum 1). 111 other respects the gearing and general construction correspond to that shown in the main views of the drawings.
It is evident that the form and construction of different parts of the machine could be modified without departing fronrmy invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a cracker-machine, the combination of a feeding and supporting drum for carrying a strip of dough, with a flattening-roller, a docking-roller, and a cutting-roller separately arranged about the feeding and supporting drum, so as to successively operate upon the strip of dough carried thereby, and means for operating the supporting-drum, flatteningroller, docking-roller, and cutting-roller, substantially as described.
2. In a cracker-machine, in combination, the feeding and supporting drum 1'), the docking-roller f f, the stripper g, provided with fingers passing between the sets of dockingpoints, the cutting-roller h t'and the springstrippers t" held therein, and means for operating the drn m b and the rollers ff and 71 t', substantially as shown and described.
