AGNAR JOHNSON, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
SPLITTING-IMACRINE.
Application filed January 31, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AGNAR JOHNSON, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Splitting-Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in splitting machines and more particularly to a machine designed for splitting leather into strips or sheets and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanaying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is an end view of my machine; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, with the knife housing removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view with the knife housing in section.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My machine consists of a frame comprising uprights 1 connected by cross pieces 2 and provided with a receiving pan 3, adapted to receive the work, and with a suitable apron 4 to which one end of a curved bed 5 is secured, which bed is also secured to the said uprights 1. To the uprights 1 at the front of the machine the forwardly extending beams 6, (3 are secured which are supported by the braces 7 and a shaft 8 journaled in said beams carries a guide roller 9 for the work; each end of the shaft 8 is provided with a bearing block 10 which, together with said shaft end, is disposed in the longitudinally slotted portion 11 of each beam 6, and a spring 12 is interposed between said bearing bloc-k and the bearing plate 13 to permit limited movement of the shaft 8 in a vertical plane to allow for work of varying thicknesses passing between the said roller 9 and the bed 5. Bearings 14 similar in every respect to the bearings just described are secured directly to the uprights 1 at the front of the machine frame and another roller shaft 15 is journaled therein and provided with another guide roller 16 similar in construction, arrange-' ment and purpose to the roller 9. To the uprights 1 oppositely disposed bearings 17, 18 are secured, the former being arranged immediately above the bearings 14 and said Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
Serial No. 75,407.
knives 24, 25, 26, 27 which are arranged to rotate in a plane between the rollers 21, 22; the knives are fast upon shafts 28, 29, 30, 31 which are j ournaled in suitable bearings formed in or secured to the cross pieces 2 and said shafts are provided respectively with worms 32, 33, 34, 35, the teeth of the successsive worms being pitched in opposite directions and all of said worms being in mesh with and driven by the several gear wheels 36 of a common drive shaft 37 with the result that the successive knife shafts and knives are driven in relatively opposite directions. A pulley 38 at one end of the shaft 37 is driven by belt 39 and another pulley 40 of shaft 37 is connected by belt 41 to a pulley 42 of a stub shaft 43 j ournaled in the machine frame. Directly opposite the pulley 42 upon the shaft 43 is another pulley 44 which is connected by belt 45 with a large pulley 46 arranged upon roller shaft 20 to drive the same. In operation the work 47 is manually forced along the bed 5 past the guide rollers 9, 16 and into engagement with the rollers, 21, 22 which are rotating and which pick up the work and move it into engagement with the rotary knives whereby it is split, the divided portions riding over the said rollers and into the pan The tension upon the rollers is sullicient to feed the work into engagement with the knives and to prevent binding or buckling of the same during the splitting operationl What is claimed is 1. In a splitting machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a curved work bed carried thereby, guide rollers carried by said frame for cooperation with said work bed, oppositely disposed work-propelling rollers carried by said frame and arranged at one end of said work bed, and a series of rotary cutters disposed in a common plane between said work-propelling rollers, the successive cutters moving in relatively opposite directions.
2. In a splitting machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a curved work bed .carried thereby, guide rollers carried by said frame for cooperation with said work bed,
oppositely disposed work-propelling rollers carried by said frame and arranged at one end of said Work bed, a drive shaft carried by said frame, a plurality of knife shafts, worm gears connecting said knife shafts and said drive shaft, the successive Worm gears having their teeth pitched in relatively opposite directions,,and rotary knives carried by said knife shafts and disposed in a com- 10 mon plane between the said work-propelling rollers for engagement with the work as it passes between the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing wit- 15 nesses.
