W, LINN. FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
No. 430,866. Patented June 24, 189 0.
WITNESSES: I w INVENTOR:
g Mk W ATTORN EY.
THE NORRIS PETERS CO FHOYO LITHO WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM LINN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0o 430,866, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed Qotobex 4, 1889.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LINN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Extinguishers, which improvement is fully set forth in the followin g specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a fire-extinguisher formed of a vessel from which the fire-extin gnishing medium may be injected into the fire, or the vessel itself may be thrown into the fire and broken, so as to liberate said medium, the construction of parts being here inafter set forth and claimed.
It further consists in providing the vessel with a self-luminous surface, whereby it is visible in dark rooms, as advantageous when fires occur in the night.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a fire-extinguisher embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a vessel, formed of glass or other suitable material and containing an acid or other medium capable of extinguishing fire. In the neck of the vessel is a tapering or conical nozzle or spout B, and above the same is a stopper O, which is adapted to close or seal said nozzle and prevent escape of the contents of the Serial No. 325,981. (No model.)
vessel. The nozzle is out or split, so as to be sprung into the neck of the vessel, and thus retain its position by expansion, it being also seated in a shoulder D, and thus prevented from being forced into the vessel. The vessel is. partly or entirely coated with self-luminous paint or material, so that it is readily visible in the dark. In the case of fire the stopper is removed and thecontents of the Vessel or fluid may be directed upon or into the fire, the nozzle, owing to its conical form, permitting'the fluid to be forcibly ejected, and thus reach a long distance. fire be serious or inconvenient of access, the Vessel will be thrown into the same, and owing to its nature it will break and thus liberate its contents, the effect of which is evident.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' A fire-extinguisher consisting of a vessel with a neck having a seat at the inner end thereof, a nozzle within the neck resting on said seat, and a stopper within the neck and closing the opening in the upper end of said nozzle, said parts being com bincd substantially as described.
. WILLIAM LINN.
