EASY-CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,829, dated June 24, 1890.

Application filed August 20, 1889. Serial No. 321,358- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN BUSOH, of New York, county and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easy- Chairs, of which the following is a-specification.

This invention relates to an improved construction of easy-chair in which the seat and back of the same can be conveniently and automatically adjusted to the body of the person sitting in the chair and in which the seat and back are automatically returned to their normal positions as soon as the weight of the body is removed therefrom.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of my improved easy-chair, showing the same respectivelyin normal position and in position with the seat and back moved in forward direction; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the chair without the upholstering.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A in the drawings represents the frame of my improved easy-chair, B the seat, and O the back of the same. The seat 13 is guided on ways of the chair-frame A, so as to slide easily forward and backward on the same. The back C is pivoted by fixed pivots O at a point below its center to the upper ends of the rear standards of the chair-frame A, the upper end of the back O being made heavier, so as to have a tendency to tilt in backward direction, and keep thereby the lower end of the back in contact with the rear end of the seat B. The under side of the seat Bis connected with the rear part of the chair-frame A by spiral springs D, which serve to return the seat and back into normal position when the easy-chair is not occupied. If a person sits in the chair and presses his back against the upper part of the back 0 the seat and back are moved forward and adjusted automatically to the condition of the bod On rising from the seat the latter is moved back by the action of the springs, and thereby the back also returned to its normal position in the chair-frame. The back being supported on fixed pivots and disconnected from the seat it swings easily on its pivots and the seat is free to move without the vertical adjustment of the back; hence the chair adjusts itself freely without binding or unnecessary friction.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a chair-frame having horizontal guideways and rear standards extending above the seat, a movable seat adapted to slide in said guideways, a spring for retracting said seat and a back supported on fixed pivots in said standards, the lower end of said back being free to swing independently of the seat, yet engaging and being engaged by the rear end of said seat, substantially as described.
