UNITED STATES PATEN rrrcn.
AMAUEL M. MILLER, OF FAIRFIELD, TEXAS.
TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,740, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed March 22, 1890. Serial No. 344,921. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, AMAUEL M. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Freestone and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Back- Band Hook, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in back-ban d hooks.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive back-band hook adapted to be readily attached to the harness and capable of receivingand securely retaining the stay chains.
A further object of the invention is to provide aback-band hook with a guide to receive the reins and prevent them becoming tangled or hooked in other portions of the harness.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a back-band hook constructed in accordance with this invention, the parts being in position preparatory to locking thestaychains. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the backband hook detached from the strap. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Referring to the accompanyin drawings, 1 designates a buckle, constructed of suitable material and consisting of side bars 2 and 3, end bars at, and a central cross-bar 5, which forms a bearing-surface for the points of tongues 6, that are secured in annular grooves of the upper side bar 2, that is preferably cylindrical. The lower side bar 3 consists of two sections 7, that have their adjacent ends terminating in depending hooks 8, which are formed integral with the section 7, and are similar in construction and arranged a short distance apart to provide a space 9, in which is arranged a pivoted hook 10, that swings in the space 9, and is arranged reversely to the other hooks, and is adapted to look a link 11 in the opening of the depending hooks 8. The sections 7 are connected by a plate 12,
that bridges the space 9 at a point opposite the section, and is provided With an annular groove 13, in which is secured an eye 14 of the upper end of the swinging hook 10, whereby the hook 10 is pivoted or hinged to the buckle. The ends 15 and 16 of the hooks are bent inward, and when in operative position in use are adapted to close thehooks and confine a link and prevent the latter becoming accidentally displaced.
In securing the link 11 the swinging hook is raised and separated from the depending hooksgand the link is hooked 011 the latter and slipped upward on their shanks toward the lower cross-bar of the buckle, and the swinging hook is then lowered and its opening arranged opposite the openings of the depending hook 8, and the link 11 is then brought to the bottom of the hooks. The back-band bears against the swinging hook and forces it outward, and causes its projecting end 16 to be arranged opposite the ends 15 of the depending hooks, and the said ends entirely close the mouths of the hooks and confine the link 11. The swinging hook 10 is provided with a ring 17, that is secured to the outer edge of its shank and enables the hook to be readily raised and lowered, and besides serving as a handle to facilitate the operation of the hook it acts as a guide to receive a rein to prevent the latter becoming tangled or caught in other portions of the harness.
It will readily be seen that the back-band hook is simple and inexpensive in construction, is capable of being readily attached to the harn ess, and of receiving and securely retaining the stay-chain, and is also adapted to receive a rein and prevent the latter becoming tangled. v
WV hat I claim is- A back-band hook comprising a buckle provided with a lower cross-bar constructed of two parts having their inner adjacent ends terminating in depending hooks arranged parallel with each other and separated by a space and provided with inwardly-projecting ends 15, partially closing the mouths of the hooks, the swinging hooks arranged in the space between the parallel hooks and provided with a projecting end 16, adapted to my own I have hereto affixed my signature in close the mouths of said hooks, the plate presence of two witnesses. 12, connecting the sections and hinging the swinging hook, and the guide-ring rigidly se- AMAUEL MILLER 5 cured to the swinging hook, substantially as Witnesses:
described. W. M. WVHITE, In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as BASCOM BELL.
