E. E. KING. COMBINATION PIPE AND NUT WRENCH. No. 430,656. Patented June 24, 1890.
MWHHWIIWI $5 2k fizz-f4? 1:. z'mdza i'fz i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERASTUS EDWIN KING, OF LEES SUMMIT, MISSOURI.
COMBINATION PIPE AND NUT WRENCH.
SIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,656, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed December 20, 1889. Serial No. 334,381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERASTUS EDWIN KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lees Summit, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Combination Pipe and Nut WVrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to pipe and nut wrenches; and the objects and advantages of theinvention, together with the novel features thereof, will hereinafter appear, and be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is asiinilar view, partly in vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a detail in front elevation of the lockinglever. Fig. 4 is a detail view to show the claws on the jaws. Fig.5 is a detail of that portion of the stock in which are located the recesses.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents the stock of the wrench, which is rectangular in cross-section and terminates at its upper end in a head 2, projected at one side of the stock to form a stationary jaw 3, ending in a beveled hammer-face, and at the opposite side of its stock in a claw 4, curved to form one member of a pipe-wrench jaw. The stock is reduced near its lower end, form ing a shank, threaded at its lower end, and mounted upon the shank at about its juncture with the stock is a ferrule 5, from which proects a lug 6. Below the ferrule there is mounted upon the shank an ordinary wooden handle 7, bound in position upon the shank by a nut 8, taking over the threaded end of the shank.
9 represents a sliding or movable jaw provided at one end with an opening of a size and shape adapted to fit the stock 1, the shank 10 of the .j aw being of rectangular shape in cross-section and arranged face to face and parallel with the stock 1, and upon its inner face provided with a series of teeth 11, and terminating at its lower end in a re duced depending stud 12. Having its upper end encircling the stud and its lower end bearing upon the lug 6 is a coiled spring 13, the tendency of which is to force the movable jaw upward and in contact with the fixed In the side face of the stock 1, and near its lower end, there is formed an irregular recess or seat 14, the lower wall of which is provided with a semicircular bearing 15, and the upper wall cut away, as at 16.
17 represents a lockingpawl, which is somewhat of an L shape, the angle of the L being provided with a bearing-rib 18*, which rests within the seat 15, and the upper portion of the L being provided with a widened and toothed head 18, which rests within the cut-away portion 16 at the upper end of the recess 14:, and is normally forced beyond the edge of the stock 1, so that the toothed head 18 will intermesh with the teeth of the shank 10. The foot of the L-shaped pawl is provided near its end and at one side of its bearing with a lug 19.
20 represents a locking-lever mounted in the recess 14: in rear of the locking-pawl, and the same comprises a head 21, pressing upon the rear face of the head 18, and a projecting lever portion 22. The parts are so disposed that the head 21 lies within the angle of the L-shaped locking-pawl, and said head is pro- ;vided upon its under side with a lug 23, corresponding with the lug 19 of the pawl, and
interposed between the head and lever and having its upper and lower ends encircling the lugs 19 and 23 is a light coiled spring 24, which, it will be apparent, serves to press the head 21 of the locking-lever against the rear face of the toothed head 18, and consequently normally projects said toothed head into mesh with the teeth 11.
25 represents an encircling band or collar, which rests upon the upper edge of the ferrule and extends up and incloses the mechanism described, the lower end of the shank 1O occurring Within the upper end of the band or collar. Openings are formed through the band or collar and the stock at suitable intervals, and through the same are passed bolts 26. The lower rear portion of the band or collar is slotted, as at 27, and through it projects the extremity of the lever portion of the lockingelever, said extremity being outwardly bent, as at 28.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description,
but may be briefly stated as follows: In order to spread the jaws, the thumb is employed to draw down upon the bent portion 28 of the locking-lever, which exerts pressure upon the foot of the L-shaped locking-pawl, and therefore in rear of its bearing 18*, thus causing said pawl to be withdrawn from mesh with the teeth 11 of the shank 10, which shank may now be forced against the tendency of its spring into the band or collar, and after a snflicient spread has been obtained the lockinglever is released and the parts resume their locked position. To decrease the spread or width between the jaws, it is simplynecessary to press the locking-lever in the same manner as before described, when the coiled spring 13 serves to force the movable head toward the stationary head, and by releasing the lever the travel of the movable jaw may be stopped at any suitable point.
Opposite the claw portion of the stationary jaw the sliding jaw is provided with a series of teeth 9* to coact with the curved jaw in gripping pipes, rods, &c.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim is 1. In a wrench, the combination, with the stock 1, terminating at its upper end in the head 2 and having claw 4, and having the irregular recess 14, terminating at its lower end in the bearing 15 and at its upper end in the cut-away portion 16, of the L-shaped locking-pawl 17, having the transversely-toothed head 18, located in the cut-away portion, the bearing 18* at its angle, the foot provided with the lug 19, the locking-lever 20, terminating at its lower end in the bent handle 22 and at its upper end in the head 21, having the lug 23, the spring24, encircling the lugs,
the shank 10, toothed, as at 11, and provided with the head 9, toothed, as at 9*, and lug 12, the collar 5, having the lug 6, the' coiled spring 13, and the band or collar encircling .the shank, stock, and locking mechanism,
substantially as specified.
2, In a wrench, the combination, with the stock 1, terminating at its upper end in the stationary head 2, at its lower end in the reduced threaded shank, and provided between its head and shank with the irregular recess 14, terminating at its lower end in the bearing 15 and at its upper end in the cutaway portion 16, of the L-shaped lockingpawl 17, having the transversely toothed head 18, located in the cut-away portion, the bearing 18* at its angle, the foot provided with the lug 19, the locking-lever 20, terminating at its lower end in the bent handle 22 and at its upper end in the head 21, having the lug 23, the spring 24, encircling the lugs, the shank 10, toothed, as at 11, and provided with the head 9 and lug 12, the collar 5, having the lug 6, the coiled spring 13, interposed between the lower end of the shank and lug, the encircling-band encircling the stock and shank and the locking mechanism, the handle 7, mounted on the shank of the stock below the collar, and the binding-nut 8, threaded on the lower end of said shank, substantially as specified.
3. In a wrench, the combination, with the stock 1, terminating at its upper end in the head 2, of the L-shaped locking-pawl17,having the transversely-toothed head 18, the
bearing 18* at its angle, the locking-lever 20,-
terminating at its lower end in the bent handle 22 and at its upper end in the head 21, the spring 24, the shank 10, toothed, as at 11, and provided with the head 9, the" collar 5, the coiled spring 13, and the band or collar encircling the shank, stock, and lockin g mechanism, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
