These cylinders P P' are placed a short distance apart and have on one side thereof` ribs p 1)', which meet at each revolution of the cylinders P P', so as to nip the lower ends of the sheets passing down from the cutting-cylinders F F. The cylinders P P' are geared together and one them P' is provided with a gear-wheel d, which operates as an intermediate between the gear-wheel C' on the main driving-shaft C, and the intermediate gear D geared together and to the cylinder l by means of a small intermediate gear 0, these gears being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. These gears are of such size that the breaking and switching cylinders P P' rotate at a slightly increased speed over and above the speed of the cutting-cylinders F F', so that when the lower end of the partially-severed sheet is nipped between the ribs p p' on the cylinders P P', they, moving at a greater speed than the sheet is normally traveling, operate during the time the ribs p p' are in contact to suddenly accelerate the movement of the down-coming sheet and break itaway from the web above at the point at which the cuttingcylinders F F' have partially severed it.
In the frame A, directly below and adjacent to the cuttingcylinders F F', are mounted tape-conveying rollers if N', from which tapes run downto tape-rollers O O', immediately above and adjacent to the brealc ing and switching rollers PP'. These rollers N and N and O and 0' are located a sufficient distance apart, so that a sheet will pass down freely between them. The rollers O O' are geared together and driven by a spur-gear, (not shown,) and from the roller O endless tapes extend to and around the roller N, and from the roller O like endless tapes extend to and around the roller N', so that the sheet travels downward by gravity between and guided by said tapes from the cutting cylinders F F' to and between the switching and breaking cylinders P P' at a speed somewhat slower than that of said tapes until after it is nipped between the ribs p p' on the breaking-cylinders P P', and severed from the web, as hereinbefore described, after which time it travels at the same speed of the tapes and breaking-cylinders P P'.
The breaking' and switching cylinders P P' are also provided with grippers r o", which are operated by ordinary gripper mechanism (not shown) to grip the lower edges of the sheets and lead them into the folders hereinafter described, the grippers r operating to seize each alternate sheet and the grippers fr the other alternate sheets, the same being alternately released and conducted into the folders hereinafter referred to by means of a vibrating switch R, located partially between thecylinders P P', and operated in the usual manner by ordinary switeh-actuating mechanism. (Not shown.)
In the ends of the lower part of the frame A, and below the plane of the breaking and switching cylinders P P', I place paper-folding machines Q Q' of the usual and ordinary construction of Stonemetz paper-folding machines. I have only shown the roller mechanism thereof, which is driven by means ot' the gears on the ends of the breaking and switching cylinders P P', which interlnesh with gears on the shaft S of the folding-machine Q and the shaft S' of the folding-machine Q', the folding-rollers T, of said machines being geared thereto in the usual manner.
Centrally in the frame A below the plane of the folding-rollers of the folding-machines Q and Q', I mount a shaft U, having thereon a gear-wheel U', which intermeshes with the drivin g-gear on the main driving-shaft C and serves to actuate other portions of the meehanism (not shown) of the folding-machines Q Q'. It will be observed that the folding-lna chines Q and Q' are arranged with their inner ends close together, so that the one end of each of said foldinganachines is directly under one of the breaking and switching cylinders and adapted to conveniently receive incoming sheets therefrom, so that each machine receives each alternate incoming sheet or pile of accumulated sheets discharged from said cylinders, they being directed into said folding-machines bythe action of the vibrating switch R, or the gri ppers r r', hereinbefore referred to.
In operation a roll of paper Z7 is placed upon the shaft a. The web passes down between the type-cylinder B, and the impression or tympan cylinder E, where the first side is printed, and thence up over the web-supporting rollers c and t', and down between the type-cylinder B', and the impression or tympan cylinder E', where the second side is printed, the websupporting roller t' being adjusted by means of the screws i', so as to cause the printed matter on the tirst side and on the second side of the web to register properly. The web then passes up around the impression-cylinder, and up over the cutting-cylinder F' and down between the cutting-cylinders F and F', when it is partially severed, whence it is conducted downward between the sheet-conveyer rollers N N' and O O', and conveyer-tapes to and between the breaking and switching cylinders P P', when the lower end of the sheet is nipped between the ribs p p' thereon and moved forward at an accelerated speed sufficiently to break the partially-severed sheet away from the web, whence it is directed into one or other of the folders Q and Q' by the operation of either of the grippers r or fr' or of the vibrating switch R, as hereinbefore described.

l. In a web-prin ting press, the combination of a horizontal press-frame, type or form cylinders mounted in said frame near each end thereof, and impression or tympan cylinders mounted in said frame between said type or form cylinders, with cutting-cylinders mounted in said frame between the impression or tympan cylinders, and breaking and switching cylinders mounted in said press-frame below the cutting-cylinders, substantially as set forth.
2. In a web-printing press, the combination of' a horizontal press-frame and cutting-cylinders mounted therein between the impressionor tympan cylinders of the press, with breaking and switching cylinders rotating at a greater speed than that of said cutting-cylinders and longitudinal ribs on said breaking-cylinders adapted to nip the edge of a partiallysevered sheet between them and break it from the web, substantially as setforth.
3. In a web-printing press, the combination of breaking and switching cylinders with grippers mounted on each of said cylinders, the grippers on one of said cylinders being adapted to close on each alternate sheet, and the grippers on the other of said cylinders being adapted to close on the other alternate sheet for directing said sheets alternately into the folders, substantially as set forth.
4. In a web-printing press, the combination of breaking and switching cylinders located on the same horizontal plane, with an oscillating switch between said cylinders adapted to direct alternate sheets from a vertical to a horizontal line of travel to the right and left alternately, substantially as set forth.
5. In a web-printing press, the combination of a horizontal press-frame having form-inking mechanism at each end thereof, type or form cylinders mounted in said frame next to the form-inking mechanism, and impression or tympan cylinders mounted in adjustable bearings in said frame between said type or form cylinders, with cutting and switching cylinders mounted centrallyin said frame, and two or more paperfolding machines mounted side by side in said press-frame underneath the printing mechanism of the press, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, in a web-printing press, of cutting-cylinders located in the upper part of the press-frame between the impressioncylinders thereof, breaking and switching cylinders located directly below the cutting-cylinders, with folding-machines located side by side below the breaking and switching cylinders, substantially as set forth.
7. In a web-printing press, the combination of the adjustable tympan or impression cylinders E E', and the adjustable cutting-cylinders F F', mounted in the projection A' of the press-frame, between and somewhat abovev the impression-cylinders E E', with the arms H, secured to the part A' of the press-frame for carrying a paper roll b and a web-supporting roll c, and the arms I, having an adjustable web-supporting roll i, mounted thereon, substantiallyas set forth.
8. In a web-printing press, the combination of a horizontal frame A, inking-mechanism carriages J and J on each end of said frame, stationary type or form cylinders B and B', mounted in said frame next to the ink-carriages J" and J', adjustable impression or tympan cylinders E and E', mounted in said frame between the type or form cylindersB and B', and cutting-cylinders mounted in said frame between the impression or tympan cylinders E and E', with breaking and switching cylinders P and P', and the paper-folding machines Q and Q', mounted in said pressframe under the printing and cutting mechanism of said press, substantially as set forth.
