UTILIZING EXHAUST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,774, dated June 10, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILHELM SCHMIDT, a subject of the King of Prussia and German Emperor, and a resident of 8 Plantagen Strasse, Ilalberstadt, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Utilizing Exhaust, (for which I have received patents in Germany, dated May 9, 1885, No, 34,358; dated February 6, 1886, No. 36,571, and dated June 2, 1886, No. 37,620,) of which the following is a complete specification, and which constitutes a combination of the invention. My invention consists in passinghigh-pressure steam through an ejector and by means of the jet forcing low-pressure or exhaust steam into a water-reservoir or low-pressure boiler. The water in this reservoir is thereby heated and converted into steam, and the steam so generated is mixed with that forced into the reservoir by the ejector. This lowpressure steam is then used for driving steamengines.
By means of my invention not only is the heat in the high-pressure steam transferred to the low-pressure steam, but the volume of the same is increased.
It is essential for the proper working of my invention that the steam from the ejector is not led direct into the steam-space of the reservoir or loW-pressu re boiler, but first through the water-space and then into the steam-space.
The high-pressure cylinder of a compound engine receives its steam from a reservoir or boiler which is heated byhigh-pressure steam. The steam used for heating this boiler is generated in a separate high-pressure boiler, and forces steam of a lower pressure at the same time into the low-pressure boiler. This lowpressure steam which the high-pressure steam forces into the reservoir is drawn oif from the receiver or receivers of a compound engine, so that only a part of the steam in the receiver is used for further work in the medium or 1ow-pressure cylinders of a compound engine.
In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
The drawing shows my invention applied to a receiver three-cylinder compound engine.
The action of my apparatus is as follows: In the arrangement shown P Q R are the three cylinders of a triple expansion engine. M M are receivers between the high and medium and medium and low pressure cylinder.
The working is as follows: In the highpressure boiler steam of forty atmospheres is generated. In the low-pressure boiler N there is a pressure of fifteen atmospheres. The high-pressure cylinder P is in direct communication with the low-pressure boiler N, and the steam is expanded in the cylinder P from fifteen atmospheres down to eight atmospheres, and exhausts into the receiver M, in which there is a pressure of eight atmospheres. Part of this steam is used to drive the medium-pressure cylinder Q, and is here expanded from eight atmospheres down to four atmospheres, when it exhausts into the receiver M. Part of this steam is used in the low-pressure cylinder R, where it is expanded from four atmospheres down to the atmospheric pressure. The rest of steam in the receiver M is drawn off by the high-pressure ejector b and which is fed by pipe I) from the high-pressure boiler A, forced through the ejector 19 in passing through which it draws the steam from the receiver M, which was not required for the cylinder Q. The steam of forty atmospheres meeting the exhaust-steam of four atmospheres from the receiver M gives a mixture of steam of twenty-five atmospheres, which, in passing through the ejector b, meets the exhaust-steam from eight atmospheres from the receiver M, giving aresult of fifteen atmospheres, which is forced into the lowpressure boiler N, to be used in the highpressure cylinder P. The low pressure serves as a governor or regulator to regulate the fluctuations in the pressure and heat, of the high-pressure steam, the water taking and storing up the superfluous heat from the same, and when the temperature and pressure of the high-pressure steam falls the water in the boiler N gives it off again in the form of steam that it produces auxiliary steam.
Having thus fully described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is* I 1. In apparatus for utilizing exhaust, :1 hi gha r i pressure boiler in communication with a water-reservoir through two or more ej ectors, the first being actuated by steam from the highpressure boiler, the 'second ejector actuated by the steam from the first ejector, and so on, a high-pressure cylinder in communication with the water-reservoir, a medium-pressure cylinder, a low-pressure cylinder, a steam-receiver between the high and medium pressure cylinders, and a steam-receiver between the medium and low pressure cylinders, the receivers being connected with said cylinders and also with the ejectors situated between the high-pressure boiler and water-reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In apparatus for utilizing exhaust, a highpressure boiler in communication with a water-reservoir through two or more ej colors, the first being actuated by steam from the highpressure boiler, the second ejector actuated by steam from the high-pressure boiler, the second ejector actuated by the steam from the first ejector, and so on, a steam-pipe coil placed in the water-reservoir through which the steam from the ejectors passes, a highpressure cylinder in communication with the Water-reservoir, a medium-pressure cylinder, a low-pressure cylinder, a steam-receiver between the high and medium pressure cylinders, and a steam-receiver between the medi um and low pressure cylinders, the receivers being connected with said cylinders and also with the ejectors situated between the highpressure boiler and Water-reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose described.
