SPECIFICATION- forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,563, dated June 3, 1890.

To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, HENRY B. CoMER, of Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Railway-Car Seats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to ca r-seats; and it consists of certain improvements, all of which are fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
In carrying out my invention I hinge the seat-back so as to be reversible on the hingearms, and these hinge-arms are pivoted to the main frame in any well-known manner. I provide the pivot or hinge between the hingearms and the back with a locking device to lock the back in both extreme positions, and this look is made to extend down to the seat arm or guide for the hinge-arm and be operated by a cam portion or groove in the casting in said seat-arm. The groove or'cani portion is so formed that the back remains locked to the hinge-arms until it is moved at or about the middle and then automatically unlocked, and again relocked at the other end of the throw of the hinge-arms or when the back has been fully reversed. I also provide locks to lock the hinge-arms in either of their extreme positions. 7
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a sectional end elevation of a car-seat embodying my invention on line a: a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View of the camguide and back for the hinge-arms, taken on line :10 cc of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line ,2 z of the seat-arm, showing the locking device'for the hinge-arms; and Fig. 6 is an elevation with part in sections, of a key for the look.
A is the main frame, which may be of any suitable construction adapted to the purpose, and is provided with the seat-arms B.
C is the seat-back, and is pivoted at cl to the upper ends of the hinge-arms D, which arms are pivoted at or near their lower ends at E to the main frame.
G is the seat-cushion, and is supported upon shifting frames F, which are moved by pins f on the hinge'arms. The plate M, secured to the back 0, and forming part of the hinge d, is provided with two notches m on, into which the bolt K is shot alternately when reversing the back. The bolt K is guided in a case L, and is pushed up toward the notches m by a spring M. K is provided with a pin is, which extends laterally into the groove h in the casting H on the seat-arm. This casting is curved from E as a center, and has the middle cam-surface I projecting down from the top of the casting or guide, and the locking parts i t' at each end. Arranged directly in front of each part 11 is a pivoted lock J, normally pressed upward by a spring j, and so that the pin can freely pass over the lock in one direction and guided 'upon the part i, but is locked against return until the lock Jis turned down by a key, Fig. 6, acting on the stem 5, Fig. 5.
I do not confine myself to the details of construction herein set out, as they may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention;
The operation will now be easily understood. The seat being in the condition shown in Fig. 1, the key is used to turn the lock J down, and then the back C and hinge-armsD (asa rigid'structure) are shifted. As soon as the hinged arms pass in front of the cam part I, the pin it is pulled down, and with it the bolt K. This releases the back, which is then reversed upon its pivot d, and when thrown with the hinge-arms to the right the pin 70 of the bolt runs over the lock-pawl J and is locked in the part 11 back of said pawl. The spring M forces the lock-bolt K up against the circular rim of the casting M and makes it snap into the notch'm when the back is fully The lower part of the bolt reversed, and the part i of the guide insures the bolt being locked therein. It will thus be seen that the back may be reversed only in the latter half of its movement when being shifted.
I do not confine myself to the mere details of construction shown, as they may be modified without departing from the spirit of myinvent-ion.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. In a car-seat, the combination of the main 5 frame, a shifting seat-back, hinge-arms pivoted at one end to the back and at the other to the main frame, a locking-bolt carried with the hingearm to lock the seat-back rigidly upon said hinge-arm, and a stationary cam part carried by the main frame, with which the locking-bolt engages to automatically shift thelocking-bolt when reversing the seatback.
2. In a ear-seat, the combination of the main I 5 frame, a shifting seat-back, hinge-arms pivoted at one end to the back and at the other to the main frame, a locking-bolt carried with the hinge-arm to lock the seat-back rigidly upon said hinge-arm, and a stationary cam part carried by the main frame, with which the locking-bolt engages to automatically shift the locking-bolt when reversing the seatback, and locks carried by the main frame to lock the hinge-arms in their two extreme po- 2 5 sitions.
3. 111 a car-seat, the combination of the main frame, a shifting seat-back, hinge-arms pivoted at one end to the back and at the other to the main frame, a locking-bolt carried with the hinge-arm to lock the seat-back rigidly upon said hinge-arm, and a stationary cam part carried by the main frame, with which the locking-bolt engages to automatically shift the locking-bolt when reversing the seat- 3 5 back, and locking-cams acting on the locking bolt to prevent unlocking of the seat-back on the hinge-arms by the shifting of the lockingbolt when the hinge-arms are in their extreme positions.
4. In a car-seat, the combination of the main frame, a shifting seat-back, hinge-arms pivoted at one end to the back and at the other to the main frame, a locking-bolt carried with the hinge-arm to lock the seat-back rigidly 5 upon said hinge-arm, and a stationary cam part carried by the main frame,wit-h which the locking-bolt engages to automatically shift the locking-bolt when reversing the seat-back, and locking-cams acting on the locking-bolt to prevent unlocking of the seat-back on the hinge-arms by the shifting of the locking-bolt when the hinge-arms are in their extreme positions and also to lock the hinge-arms in their extreme positions.
5. In a car-seat, the combination of the main frame and seat-arms, a shifting seat-back, hinge-arms pivoted at one end to the seatback at its middle and at the other to the main frame, a guide carried .by the main frame and secured to the seat-arms provided with a central cam, and a locking-bolt carried by the hinge-arm having its end extending into said guide to lock the back rigidly to the hinge-arm.
6. In a car-seat, the combination of the main frame and seat-arms, a shifting seat-back, hinge'arms pivoted at one end to the main frame, a guide carried by the main frame and secured to the seat-arms provided with a central cam, and a spring-actuated locking-bolt carried by the hinge-arm to lock the back rig idly to the hinge-arm in its two, extreme positions, and engaging the guide and actuated by the cam of the guide to unlock the back when in line with the cam of the guide.
7. In a car-seat, the combination of the main frame, a-shifting seat-back, hingearms pivoted at one end to the middle of the back and at the other to the main frame, a plate secured to the seat-back close to its pivot having notches, and a long bolt carried by the hinge-arm exterior to the hinges with the seat-back and extending toward the hingepoint between the hinge-arm and main frame and longitudinally movable thereon to lock into said notches.
8. In a car-seat, the combination of the main frame, a shifting seat-back, hinge-arms pivoted at one end to the middle of the back and at the other to the main frame, a plate secured to the seat-back close to its pivot having notches, and a long bolt carried by the hinge-arm exterior to the hinge with the seat-back and extending toward the hingepoint between the hinge-arm and main frame, and longitudinally movable thereon to look into said notches, and a spring to force said bolt into the notches.
9. In a car-seat, the combination of the main frame, a shifting seat-back, hinge-arms pivoted at one end to the middle of the back and at the other to the main frame, a plate secured to the scat-back close to its pivot having notches and longitudinally movable thereon, a long bolt carried by the hinge-arm to lock into said notches, a spring to force said bolt into the notches, and a cam secured rigidly to the main frame and in the path of the bolt in reversing the seat-back, and adapted to actuate the bolt to withdraw it to release the seat-back.
10. The combination of the main frame A, having seat-arm B, the guide I'I, having cam I, secured to the seat-arm, .reversible seatback 0, hinge-arms D, pivoted to the main frame and seat-back, plate M, having notches m 772, secured to the back, and locking-bolt K, carried by the hinge-arm and having pin it, working in connection with the cam I to unlock the back on the hinge-arms.
