Be it known that I, CLARENCE G. BACKUS,

a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Phila- 5 delphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain novel fea- IO tures in the construction and arrangement of the parts of an inkstand, whereby the ink is readily delivered for use.

The principal objects of my invent-ion are,

first, to provide an inkstand having delicate or sensitive means applied thereto for. the

compression of the air therein, so that by a slight pressure of the pen against the delivery-tube of the inkstand the fluid is presented for use, and, second, to provide an inkstand with adjustable means to permit of the free flow of the ink through the deliverytube of the stand notwithstanding the quantity of ink contained therein may have been reduced.

The nature and characteristic feature of my invention will be more particularly understood, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through an inkstand embodying the features of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of a slightly-modified form of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, A is the inkstand, made of glass or other preferred material.

B is the cap or cover, of any preferred shape or form and material, firmly secured to the threaded portion of the stand.

0n the upper edge of the inkstand A is mounted a gasket 0, of rubber or other material, and between this gasket 0 and the base I) of the cap or cover B is interposed a concave or other preferred form of disk D, made of rubber or other flexible or pliable material.

Extending downward through the cap or cover B and the disk D is a tube e, made of rubber, celluloid, or other material. This tube 6 is threaded at its upper extremity, and

onto which is mounted, preferably, an enlarged funnel-shaped tube f.

Formed integral with or secured to the tube 6 is a recessed rim or collar g, into the recess of which is fitted the disk D, and between the upper surface of this disk D and the rim or rigid collar g is interposed a.-delicate flat spring h, as shown in Fig. 1.

The several parts are secured in the mannerhereinabove described to compress the air in the chamber of the inkstand A, so that by a slight pressure of the pen exerted against the funnel-shaped extremity of the delivery-tube e the ink or fluid will be permitted to rise in the tube 6 and to be presented for use at the funnel-shaped extremity thereof.

The tube e may be provided with avalve 'i, of suitable construction to regulate the flow of the ink or fluid through the same, and the funnel-shaped extremity f of said deliverytube 6 is preferably made so as to be readily detachable therefrom for cleansing and adjusting purposes.

In Fig. 2 a slightly-modified form of arrangement of the delivery-tube e is illustrated. For instance, the tube 6 is provided simply with an annular rim g, against the under surface of which fits simply the concave rubber seat or disk D, and between the upper surface of said rim and disk and the lower extremity of the funnel-shaped end f of the delivery-tube e is interposed a helical or spiral spring h for holding the respective parts in their proper relative positions to each other, and also for permitting them to return to their normal positions after removal of the pressure exerted against the upper extremity of said delivery-tube for presenting the ink In this view the funnelshaped end of the delivery-tube is also constructed so as to be detached from the tube 6.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination, the inkstand with its cover B, the flexible concave disk D, interposed between said cover and stand, the tube 6, with its collar or rim 9 and detachable fun- IQ cheek-valve QT, mounted in said tube, and the spring h, interposed between said collar and disk, substantially as and for the purposes described.
