SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,461, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed October 29, 1889 Serial No. 328,527. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TARGE G. MANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved clevis. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec- Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line 00 a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a View of the under side of the clevis with the pin removed, and Fig. 6 is a front view of the same with the pin in position.

This invention relates to that class of clevises which are provided with a latch or similar means for holding the pin in its locked position; and my improvement consists in the detailed construction and combination of the clevis proper, a spring-latch or automaticallyoperating locking device forming part of the same, and the pin, substantially as willbe hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the clevis or clevis-iron, the arms of which are provided with the usual registering bolt holes or apertures B and O for-the insertion of the removable bolt or pin D. The body A is grooved longitudinally, as shown at a, for the twofold purpose of reducing the weight and also forming a chamber or recess in the lower arm for the insertion of the latchspring E, which is simply a piece of suitablytempered spring-wire cut to the proper length and inserted lengthwise .into the recess a, where it is held firmly in place by clinching with two or more tongues 19 b, cast upon that part of the clevis on opposite sides of the recess, and bent in over and upon the wire within the recess, as will appear. more clearly by reference to Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The free end of this latch-spring E projects through a longitudinal slot or recess F, which forms, so to speak, a continuation of the groove or recess a, and is cut through laterally into the lower bolt-hole C, so as to permit the outer end of the spring to play in this hole and engage the annular recess gin the clevis pin or bolt G. The latch-spring E projects through the bolt-hole G and slot F, and is bent or doubled atits extreme outer end to form a convenient fin ger-piece f, which is protected by a guard H, formed by a lip or projection on the lower-arm of the clevis. This guard also operates to form a finger-hold in manipulating the spring, which is sprung back to release the pin simply by placing the thumb against the guard H and the first finger in its bent position against the fingerpiece f, at the same time pressing the fingers together. n
The pin or bolt D, which has the usual head D and fits into the bolt-holes B and O, has a rounded point at its lower end, a short distance above which is an annular groove or recess g, with an abrupt shoulder h, but-beveled or sloping sides 1'. This recess 9 is so located that it, when the pin is inserted and pushed home, will coincide with that part of the latch-spring E which projects through the lower bolt-hole O, with which it will engage or interlock automatically when the pin is pushed home. When in this closed or locked position, the abrupt shoulder h of the groove in the pin will prevent the latter from becoming accidentally disengaged or unlocked, which can only be done by releasing the latch with the fingers in the manner described above.
' The object of constructing the annular locking groove or recess g with sloping sides ii is to prevent the pin from breaking or snapping the spring if it should be pushed down suddenly, by a blow, for example, which would cause the outer ends of the clevis to give sufficiently to let the recess in the pin pass down into the lower bolt-hole beyond the spring, or if the clevis should become bent so as to shorten the distance between its outer ends, and thus shear the spring 01f by pushing the bolt down too far; but this is prevented by constructing the annular recess in the pin with sloping sides, thereby enabling the lower end of the pin to clear the spring with which it engages when it is pushed or struck in a downward direction, while at the same time, owing to the abrupt shoulder h, it is impossible to draw the pin in an upward direction without first disengaging or releas it from the interlocking latch-spring E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the clevis-iron grooved longitudinally for the insertion of the spring, having clinching-tongues on opposite sides of the recess adapted to clinch the inner end of the spring within said recess, and provided with a slot in its lower arm, forming a continuation of the spring-recess and intersecting the lower bolt-hole, said lower arm being in presence of two witnesses.
