UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL GABLEE, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
PIANO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,434, dated J' une 8, 1890. Application filed December 2, 1889. Serial No. 332,216.. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL GABLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pianos, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in music holders or rests for pianos and other key-board instruments, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a partly sectional view, taken through the line c c, Fig. 2,v of a piano furnished with one form of my improved mu sic stand or holder. Fig. 2 is a front view of a piano with improved music holder or rest. Fig. 3 is a front view of a piano furnished with a modification of the music holder 0r rest shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 7c k of Fig. 3.
Similar letters throughout the several views indicate similar parts.
A is the lid of a piano or other key-board instrument. B is the face-plate, upon which this lid may rest when folded down. To the upper edge of the face-plate is or Inay be hinged a movable leaf or board D,which constitutes when raised the upper portion of the music-stand. This leaf D can be folded down or lowered, as shown by full lines in Fig. 1.
A modification of myimproved music-stand is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and consists in adapting the board D to slide into a recess b in or behind said face-plate B. This sliding board D may be held in the raised position by springs or other suitable mechanism, and may be readily released and slid out of sight when not in use.
Myimproved music-stand is simple in construction and does not mar the beauty of the piano-front. It is not necessary to open the key-board nor to raise the lid A to permit of its use, and there is no complicated mechanism connected with it liable to break or get out of order.
The improved In usic stand is especially adapted to be used in conjunction with the sliding and hinged lid F G, covering the keyboard, which was patented to me by Letters Patent of the United States, dated August 1S, 1885, No. 324,467, the construction of said lid being shown in Figs. l, 2, and 4.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1. The stationary face-plate B of a piano or other key-board instrument, combined with the movable board or leaf D, which when lifted is adapted to constitute an upward eX tension of the stationary face-plate B, so that when thus extended both together will constitute a musicstand, substantially as set forth.
y 2. A music-stand for pianos or similar keyboard instruments, consisting of two portions, one the stationary face-plate B of the piano, the other the movable leaf D, said leaf adapted to slide into a recess in the stationary faceplate B of the piano and to be drawn upward when said stand is to be used, as and for the purpose set forth.
EMIL GABLER.
