BENEDICT FREY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., AND HENRY-LOGES, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY' VENT-FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,433, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed December 16, 1889. Serial N0. 383,908. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that we, BENEDICT FREY, of the city, county, and State of New York, and HENRY LOGES, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vent Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved at' tachment to faucets for beer and other kegs, whereby simultaneously with the opening and closing of the faucet the vent-opening for the keg is opened and closed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of a keg, showing our improved vent attachment and the faucet in position thereon. a side view of the faucet, drawn on a larger scale, showing the connection of the tap-plug of the same with the valved end of the venttube. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the faucet on the line 2 2, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the coupling by which the vent-tube is connected to its valved end.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the faucet of a beer or other keg; B, the vent-plug 0f the same, and O a vent-tube, of rubber or other suitable flexible material, that connects the vent-plug B along the outside of the keg with the faucet, as shown in Fig. 1. The faucet A is made of the usual shape and material and provided back of its dischargespout and head with a detachable or adjustable collar D, which is made of two sections (Z d, that are hinged together at one end and connected by a fasteningscrew d, which passes through the lug d at the opposite end, as shown in Fig. 3. One of the sections d is provided with a ring-shaped arm or standard D, that supports the valved front end 0 of the vent-tube O. The front end C is securely applied to. the supporting-arm D by means of a jam-nut 01 that is screwed up against said arm on the externally-threaded surface of the end 0' of the vent-tube. The front end of the vent-tube C- is provided in front of the arm D with a valve or cook 0 the handle of Fig. 2 is which is applied to a slotted arm E, that is connected by an intermediate pivot-link c with a lever-arm E, that is applied by an adjustable collar e to the tap-plug A of the faucet A. The collar of the lever-arm E is attached to the tap-plug A by a clamp-screw e, that engages the end lugs of the collar 6, so that the collar is tightly clamped to the tap-plug of the faucet. The vent-plug B is also provided with a stop-cock b, by which the vent may be closed-for instance, when the keg is to be kept over night, or when it is desired to remove the vent-tube and faucet. The vent-tube B is connected by a coupling F with the valved end 0', the coupling being formed of flat sections f f, having registering vent-openings f'- and an intermediate perforated washerbetween thefaces of said sections,
clamped together by a U shaped clasp F, that is pivoted to one of the sections of the coupling, the clasp being provided with a lug for taking hold of the same in removing it from the sections ff or applying it thereto. The coupling F serves for the purpose of disconnecting the vent-tube from the valved end 0, attached to the faucet, whenever the latter is to be removed from the'keg for cleaning or other purposes, or when the keg is to be tapped. Then the faucet is replaced, the connection between the valved end 0 and the vent-tube O is reestablished and the stopcock of the vent-plug B opened. When the tap-plug A -of the faucet A is turned into open position, the leverconnection between the same and the valved end 0 of the vent-tube C is operated, so as to turn the valve and move it into open position, andpermit thereby the atmospheric air to enter through the venttube and vent-plug to the interior of the keg,
charged through the faucet. \Vhen the tapvent-tube is simultaneously closed, and thereby the admission of air to the interior of the keg prevented. In this manner the vent attachment is operated simultaneously with the opening and closing of the faucet in drawing off the liquid in the keg.
Ourimproved vent attachment for kegs has as shown in Fig. 4. The sections ff are tightlyso that the liquid in the same can be displug of the faucet is closed, the valve of the the advantage that it can be readily applied to any faucet without requiring a faucet of any special construction. It can therefore be furnished at a low price, and can be applied with great facility to the faucet and ventplugs in common use, which'is a great practical advantage for its introduction to speciallyconstructed vent-faucets.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A vent apparatus for barrels or kegs, consistin g of an adjustable collar adapted for application to a tap-faucet and provided with an arm, a vent-tube provided with a valve
