APPARATUS FOR RACKING OFF BEER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 716,962, dated December 30, 1902.

Be it known that I, HARRY TORCHIANI, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of. New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Racking Off Beer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to improvements in means for filling barrels and other packages; and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, efficient, and reliable apparatus for racking off beer by means of which the packages may be more readily filled, the passage of the liquid from the chipcask or distributing-receptacle to the package controlled, and the beer ordinarily wasted in the operation entirely obviated.

To these ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a front view of an apparatus made according to and embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail central section illustrating the construction of the racking-off faucet.

In said drawings, A designates a distributing-receptacle having a glass portion A intermediate its top and bottom and provided with legs a a and supported upon a shelf or platform B. To the bottom of said distributing-receptacle A is connected the end of a 'liexible pipe O, leading from the chip-Cask or receptacle from which the beer or liquid is to drawn. D and D denote couplings provided in the top of the distrihuting-receptacle A, and E E denote racking-olfjfaucets, the intake portions of which are connected to the couplings D D of the distributing-receptacle Aby the flexible pipes F F. To the coupling D', which is provided with a valve and a cock CZ', is connected a pipe F, by means of which the waste and foam passing through the distribuiing-receptacle Aat the beginning of the operation may be conducted from said receptacle to the place of discharge, and G denotes a gage secured to the top of the distributing-receptacle, whereby to indicate the pressure under which the Huid is supplied to the package.

H H denote pulleys secured in the ceiling or other overhead support, through which are passed ropes H H', provided at their outer ends with counterweights H2 H2 and secured at their inner ends to rackingbi' faucets E E.

To the rear of the distributing-receptacle A is disposed a cylinder I, which is supportf ed upon the platform or shelf B by means of pipes J J, having transparent glass sections J J. K K denote removable heads secured to the ends of said cyliuderI to permit of access to the interior thereof for cleaning, one of which heads is provided with a cock b. L denotes a gage secured to said cylinder for indicating the counter-pressure therein, and M denotes a relief-valve, by means of which the excess of pressure and foam may be relieved. From the relief-valve` M extends a pipe M', provided at its end with screwthreads c.

N N denote flexible pipes connecting the outlet portions of the racking-off faucets E E with the lower ends of the pipes J J, supporting the tank I.

O O denote barrel-seats, upon which are supported the barrels O O to be filled.

The racking-off faucets each comprise an outer casing E, consisting of the upper section E and a lower detachable section E3, the upper section E having an opening e therein, an annular recess f above said opening, and a screw-threaded portion g above said recess, and adjacent to the lower end of said upper section E is a screw-threaded dis` charge-outlet h. Vithin the annular recess f is disposed a rubber washer t', above said rubber washer 'i a brass ring j, and bearing thereon in the screw-threaded portion of said upper section is disposed a jam-nut Zt, having a central passage Z3 and a handle 7a2.

F2 denotes the inlet-tube,extending through the outer case E and provided at its upper end with a valve F3 and at its lower projecting end with a conical rubber ring Z and a rubber buffer Z and adjacent to said rubber ring Z with outlet-apertures m.

The lower section F.3 of the casing E is provided at its lower edge with a flange n and above said Iiange n with a washer fn', and

ythe apertures 0 in the flange of the sleeve o and serve to hold said sleeve against rotary movement, and P denotes a lever pivotally secured to the ange p of the lower section E3, having a cam-groove q, engaging the stud o2 on the flange of the sleeve 0.

By actuating the lever P the rubber washer n is expanded and the faucet secured in the bung-hole of the barrel, and by loosening the jam-nut 7c the inlet-tube F2 may be adjusted to any desired position or its outlet-apertures m sealed by drawing up said tube F2 until the rubber ring l contacts with the inner lower edge of the lower section E3 of the case E, whereupon the said tube may be secured in position by a partial turn of the jam-nut 7c and in this way permit of the faucet being closed before its withdrawal from the barrel and all waste of liquid avoided.

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The valve (not shown) controlling the passage of the beer from the chip-Cask or storage-receptacle is iirst opened and the liquid permitted to enter the distributing-receptacle A and pass out of it through the pipe F. As soon as the air, foam, and impure liquid has ceased to flow (which may be determined by opening the cock d on the coupling D) the pipe F is detached from the coupling D and attached to the screw-threaded end of the pipe M', extending from the relief-valve m. Hereupon the racking-oft` faucets are introduced into the bung-holes of the barrels or packages to be filled, secured therein by means of the levers P, the inlet-tubes adjusted and Secured in position by turning the handle k2, and one of the valves l1"3 then operated and the liquid permitted to enter the barrel, the air and foam being permitted to pass off through the flexible pipe N and pipe J into the tank I and into the next package, and thus providing the counter-pressure, the pressure in which is controlled by the relief-valve M, and the excess of liquid conducted from said tank by means of the pipe M' and flexible pipe F', attached thereto.

Without limiting myself to the details of construction, which may be varied within the scope of the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In an apparatus for the purposes specified, a racking-off faucet comprising an outer casing composed of an upper section and a lower section detachably secured thereto having a flange at its lower edge, said upper section having an outlet, a central passage, a

gasket disposed therein, a jam-nut having a central opening and disposed in said passage, an inlet-tube slidably disposed within said outer casing and extending therethrough and the jam-nut therein, a valve at the upper end of said tube, a conical valve-face at the lower end of said tube, outlets in the lower end of said tube above said conical valve-face, a sleeve slidably disposed upon the lower section of the outer casing, an expansible gasket upon said lower section intermediate the lower edge of said sleeve andthe flange at the lower edge of said outer casing, an eccentric mounted upon said outer casing and contacting with said slidable sleeve whereby to actuate said sleeve to expand the gasket, substantially as specified.

2. In an apparatus for the purposes specified, a racking-off faucet comprising an outer casing composed of an upper section and a lower section detach-ably secured thereto having a flange at its lower edge, said upper section having an outlet, a central passage, an inlet-tube slidably disposed within said outer casing and extending therethrough, means for securing said tube in position within said outer casing, a valve at the upper end of said tube, a valve-face at the lower end of said tube, and ports in said tube above the valveface, combined with means for securing the racking-off faucet within a receptacle or package, substantially as specified.

In an apparatus for the purposes specified, a racking-off faucet comprising an outer casing composed of an upper section having an outlet-nozzle projecting from its side, and screw-threads at its lower end, and a lower section provided at its upper end with screwthreads adapted to engage the screw-threads at the lower end of the uppersection,and a flange at the lower end ot' said lower section; the upper section having a central passage, a gasket disposed therein, a jam-nut having a central opening and disposed in said passage,an inlettube slidably disposed within said outer casing and extending therethrough and the jamnut therein, a valve at the upper end of said tube, a valve-face at the lower end of said tube adapted to Contact with the iiange at the lower end of the outer casing, and ports in said tube above said valve-face, combined with means for securing the racking-off faucet within a receptacle or package, substantially as specified.
