To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK MOMAHON, of
Whitestone, Queens county, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cylinder-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in cylinder-locks, and has for its object to provide a lock of simple and durable construction, containing but one cylinder, and having the tumblers so arranged that by increasing or decreasing the length thereof an indenite set of combinations may be produced.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the lock that a master-key may be made to lit and manipulate all of the locks manufactured embodying the improvement.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation 0f the lock. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same, illustrating the pass-key in position. Fig. 3 is also a central vertical section illustrating the master-key inserted in the lock. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section illustrating the tumblers in a locked position, the sections 2, 3, and 4 being taken on line of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken ata right angle to the line :1c a: of Fig. 1 upon the line y 'y of Fig. 4.
In carrying out the invention the body of the lock consists, preferably, of a cylindrical section 10, having` a rectangular extension 11, integral with one side and extending essentially from top to bottom, and a cap-plate 12, integral with the upper portion of the body, the cylindrical section 10 of the said body and likewise the cap-plate immediately over the said section being provided with a longitudinal cylindrical bore, and the extension 11 of the body is provided with a longitudinal rectangular chamber 13, which chamber extends through the cylindrical section and connects with the bore therein, as best illustrated in Fig. 5. In the bore of the cylindricalsection 10 of the body a cylinder 14 is inserted and held free to turn therein, and the chamber 13 of the body-extension l1 is divided into a series of compartments 15, ve being illustrated, by means of parallel-spaced partitions or walls 16, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The cylinder 14 is provided with the usual key-slot 17 in one side, and a chamber 18 is formed in the opposite side of the said cylinder, connecting with the -key slot 17. This chamber 18 of the cylinder is adapted to contain the tumblers 19.
In each of the compartments 15 of the bodyextension 11 a tumbler 20 is held to slide, which tumblers are of sufficient thickness to neatly iit in the said compartments, yet slide freely therein. The tumblers 20 in the eX- tension of the casing of the body are normally forced downward to enter the chamber 18, when the lock is in the locked position, by means of springs 21 contacting with thel inner face of the casing-tumblers and the opposed faces of the casing, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The chamber 18 of the cylinder is divided into a series of compartments corresponding in num ber to the compartments 15 of the casing by partitions 22, which cylinder-partitions are in the same plane with the casing partitions, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. y
In each of the compartments of the cylinder-chamber two tumblers 23 are held to slide, the combined tumblers of each compartment corresponding in cross-sectional area with the cross-sectional area of the casing-tumbler 20 immediately above them. Thus for each casing-tumbler two cylinder-tumblers are provided. Each tumbler in each of the compartments of the cylinder-chamber 18 is free to act independently, and the said tumblers are preferably so arranged in the cylinder-chamber that each alternate tumbler is of dierent length. It will thus be observed that when the key `is in the position to be withdrawn, whether it be the pass-key or the master-key, when the key is Withdrawn the springs 21,
' acting upon the casing-tumblers 20, will canse the latter to force the cylinder-tumblers downward to such an extent that the lower portion of the casing-tumblers will pass into the cylinder, as shown in Fig. 4, and prevent the cylinder from being turned until the proper key is inserted to lift the cylinder-tuinhlers. The passkcy is adapted to act upon one tuinbler contained in cach compartment of the cylinder-chamber to lii' t the said tumbler, which cylinder-tumbler may be the outer o1' the inner tumbler of each compartment, as may be found desirable. In the drawings the pass-key is represented as acting upon the outer tumblerof cach set and the masterkey acts upon the other tumbler of each set, and is shown as adapted to elevate the inner tumbler. The wards of the pass-key are so arranged that they will contact, for instance, with the outer cylinder-tuinbler of each set and press the saine upward to carry the casing-tumbler out of Contact with the cylinder, as shown in Fig'. 2, and adjacent to each ward of the pass-key a cavity is formed of sullicient depth to admit of the inner tumbler of each set dropping downward between the contaeting` walls of the cylinder and casing.
It will be readily observed that by lengthening; or shortening the tnlnblers acted upon by the pass-key a dllerent key may be fitted for each lock manufactured and which would be useless to unlock any but the lock for which it isespecially adapted.
'l`l1e1nasterkey, as shown at Fig. 3, is provided with wards adapted to elevate the inner cylinder-tumbler of each set and with a cavity adjacent toeach ward of sufficient depth to admit of the longest tumbler eniployed in connection' with the passkey to drop downward within the cylinder out of all possible contact with the casino'.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patl ent- In a cylinder-lock, the combination, with a series of spring-actuated tumblers held t0 slide in a casing, of a series of thinner tuinblers held to slide in the cylinder and so arranged that two of Said cylinder-tuinblcrs will oppose each of the casing-tuniblers, substantially as specilied.
