Description

(No Model.)
J. R. TORREY.
RAZOR STROP.
No. 429,293. I Patented June 3, 1890'.
I GHQ an m UNITED STATES PATENT (OFFICE.
JOSEPH R. TORREY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
RAZO R-STRO P.
S?ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,293, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed January 17,1890. Serial No. 337,209. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. TORREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor- Strops, of which the following isa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the manufacture of razor-strops having cushioned stropping-surfaces composed of stuffed leather casings with underturned edges it is desirable to have the edges of the stropping-cushions as elastic as possible, so as to get the best effect of the cushioned stropping surfaces when sharpening very thin-edged hollow-ground razors, for which the cushioned strops are specially intended; but with the strops of the character referred to, as they have heretofore been constructed, the double thicknesses of the leather of the underturned or inturn ed edges have rendered said edges too stiff, owing to the fact that said edges have been supported directly by the rigid body parts of the strops, to which body parts the stropping-cushions are attached.
The object of my invention is to render the edges of the stropping-cushions more elastic, so as to get the best possible effect in stropping, and this object I accomplish by making the central rigid body of the strop of a less width than that of the cushions, thereby permitting the edges of the latter to overhang the edges of the former, and the edges of the cushions, not being directly supported by the body, will be much more yielding in use than they otherwise would be.
In' the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved razor-strop; Fig. 2, an edge view; and Fig. 3 is a central cross-section thereof on a slightly larger scale than Figs. 1 and 2.
A denotes the central wooden body part of the strop, one end thereof being shaped into a handle a, and B denotes the stropping-cushions secured to said body in any suitable manner, and each consisting of a strip "of leather folded or turned under at eachside, so that there is a double thickness of the leather at the edges of the said cushions. The body A is cut away at its sides, excepting at its ends, so as to be of less width than the stropping-cushions, the edges of the latter thus overhanging the edges of the wooden body of the strep, so that they will yield to slight pressure, and thus afford the proper elastic contact to the razor-blades when in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A razor-strop provided with a rigid body and With stropping-cushions which are of a greater width than the said body, so as to overhang the latter at both edges of each cushion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH R. TORREY.
