'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LoUIs w. LEvY, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
DIAMOND-)WASHER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,276, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed August 23, 1889. Serial No. 321,757. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS IV. LEVY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diamond- W'ashers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple device for effective washing of diamonds or other articles of jewelry without the use of a brush or the like, as ordinarily, thereby not only obviating the direct handling of the jewelry during the washing process, but also permitting' a number of articles to be washed in one operation. Y
To this end my invention consists of a sieve combined with a well for containing water, alcohol,` or other washing-liquid, the rim of the sieve having spurs or offsets diametrically opposite each other to act as pivotal supports for the sieve, permitting` it to be rocked as well as rotated by hand within the well for the purpose of agitatin g the art-icles to be washed in the liquid, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a vertical central section of a washer embodying my invention. Fig. II represents a horizontal section thereof on the line ac Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
The letter A indicates the body of the sieve, attached to a suitable rim B on the upper edge, the whole being usually made of sheet metal, and C indicates the body of the well, which, together with its lid D, is usually made of porcelain or other suitable material.
e e are spurs or offsets formed in the sheet metal composing` said rim B of the sieve at points diametrically opposite to each other. Both the sieve A and well C are circular in shape, and the sieve is fitted looselyinto the well, while the spurs e e project outwardly from the sieve a sufficient distance, so thatJ when the sieve is put in place the spurs rest on the upper edge of the well, but without interfering with the free adjustment of the lid, said edge of the well being Hat.
In practice the well C is supplied with a suitable liquid and the sieve Ais introduced therein, bringing the spurs c e upon the flat edge of the well. The articles to be washed are then laid in the sieve, and by taking hold of the rim B with the fingers the sieve is rocked on -the pivotal supports formed by the spurs e e, and also rotated horizontally by causing said spurs to ride or travel on the fiat edge of the well, whereby the articles contained in the sieve are thoroughly agitated in and exposed to the cleansing action of the liquid. In order to permit said rocking motion of the sieve A it is important that both the well C and the sieve shall be circular in shape, and also that the upper edge of the well be flat for presenting a plane surface to the spurs.
By my invention any desired number of articles may be washed in one operation, and by removing the sieve A from the well C the liquid may be allowed to drain off, so as to dispense with drying the articles by hand, while the liquid, moreover, may be used for repeated washings, and, since the Well may be tightly closed by means of its lid, it, together with the sieve, is protected against dust, dto., and the liquid against evaporation. The rim B of the sieve extends above the top of the well C and acts as a handle for the sieve; but the latter may be provided with an additional handle, which may fold into the sieve.
If desirable, the sieve A may be lined with a suitable cloth to prevent abrasion of the articles by contact with the metal of which the sieve is composed.
Vha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is` Y A jewelry or diamond washer consisting of a circular well having a flat upper edge and a circular sieve having its rim provided with spurs diametrically opposite each other to rest on said edge o"f the well, thereby forming pivotal supports for the sieve, substantially as and for the purpose described.
