My invention has for its object to provide a neat, simple, and convenient frame or holder for containing a pack or series of printed sales slips or sheets for use in large retail and other storesfand for other purposes; and my invention consists in certain novel combinations of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter particularly set forth.
In the said drawings, A represents a sheetmetal frame or holder open at the front and rear and provided on its front side, at the top and bottom, with inwardly-turned retaining flanges or lips a l), for holding within the frame the pack of printed sales slips or sheets B, which are preferably made in a continuous strip perforated transversely at the points where the slips or sheets are to be torn off or separated from each other. A pack or series of separate sheets or a sales-book of any other suitable construction and of a size adapted to fit within the frame A may be used instead, if preferred; or the holder may be used for containing a series of sheets used for any other purpose.
The frame A is provided on its rear side with flanges 0 cl, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Within the frame A are placed two movable plates or followers 0 D, corresponding in size to the interior of the frame and adapted to move freely therein, these plates being retained in place within the frame by the flanges on the front and rear sides thereof. Between the follower-plates C D is placed a spring or springs G, by means of which the said two plates are forced outward in opposite directions toward the flanges on the front and rear sides of the frame. The spring G herein shown consists of a plate of thin spring metal provided at its opposite ends with spring-fingers, bent as shown in Fig 5, and adapted to bear against the plates O D; but a spring or springs of any other suitable construction may be employed, if desired.
The follower-plate O is adapted to bear against the bottom of the pack B of printed slips or sheets, and exert an outward pressure thereon to keep it in contact with the retaining-flanges on the front side of the holder and at the same time permit the said slips or sheets to be successively withdrawn for use until the entire pack has become exhausted. Between the other follower-plate D and the flanges c d on the rear side of the holder A are placed one or more record-sheets I-I, having spaces numbered to correspond with the respective numbers of the sheets of the pack B, said record sheet or sheets being held firmly in place against the flanges c d by the outward pressure of the spring-actuated follower: plate D. The upper edge of the followerplate 0 is provided with a series of apertures 6, Figs. 3 and 4, having burr edges;or it may be otherwise provided with one or more projections or teeth, whereby sufficient friction is produced against the under side of the upper end of the pack B to prevent it from being drawn out of the holder when the slips or sheets are withdrawn for use.
Immediately beneath the retaining-flange a, at the top of the front side of the frame, is placed a narrow strip or plate f, said plate and the flange a forming a pair of jaws for holding the transfer-sheet I, which serves the ordinary purpose of producing on the sheet upon which it rests a fac-simile or duplicate of the writing placed upon the leaf or slip which rests upon the said transfer-sheet. At the opposite ends of the strip or plate f are projections 10, which fit loosely within slots or recesses 12 in the sides of the frame A, these recesses being of such size as to permit the strip f to have a limited amount of n1otion toward and from the flange a, the plate f resting on the top of the pack, which, as it is forced outward by the spring-actuated follower-plate 0, tends to press said plate f toward the flange a, and thus cause the edge of the transfer-sheet I to be confined tightly in place, as required, in a position to allow it to be introduced between the outside sheet of the pack and the one immediately beneath it, the top of said outside sheet having been previously drawn out from under the plate 1" and left loose, as seen in Fig. 1.
In using my holder, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the transfersheet between the outer slip and the one immediately beneath it, the salesman writes upon the outer slip the particulars of the sale, together with the amount thereof, producing at the same time, by means of the transfer-sheet, a fac-simile or duplicate upon the slip or sheet upon which said transfersheet rests. The amount of the sale and the number of the salesman are also written upon the coupon is at the lower end of the outside sheet, and the amount of the sale is also written upon the record-sheet ll on the rear side of the holder. The salesman then pulls the bottom of the upper sheet out from under the retaining-flanges b at the bottom of the front of the holder, which operation also draws out the bottom of the next sheet beneath upon which the duplicate was written, as above described. He then pulls out the upper end of the duplicate sheet from under the plate f and separates it from thenext slip by tearing it on a line of perforations which are just even with the edge 15 of the holder, said edge facilitating the operation of tearing off the sheet, after which the salesman separates the outside sheet from the duplicate by tearing them apart on a line of perforations made for the purpose, and finally tears off the coupon at the lower end of the outside slip, to be afterward disposed of as desired. This leaves the pack with the slips or sheets in the position seen in Fig. 1, ready for the' op eration to be repeated at the next sale.
It will be obvious that this holder is applicable not only to sales-slips, but to businesscards, advertisements, calendars, or anything of the kind where it is desirable to remove a single sheet at a time, whether printed in a continuous strip or not, and I in this invention limit myself in no way to sales-slips alone. In case of cards, calendars, &c., I should make my holder, in some instances, with only one follower-plate.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A frame or holder provided with retainin g-flan ges on its front and rear sides for holding the pack of sales slips or sheets, and one or more record-sheets to be used in connection therewith, in combination with two movable spring-actuated plates or followers, one adapted to bear against the bottom of the pack and exert an outward pressure thereon to keep the said pack in contact with the retaining-flanges on the front side of the holder, and the other acting in the opposite direction to hold the record sheet or sheets against theretaining-flanges on the rear side of the holder, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a frame or holder provided. with retaining-flanges for holding a pack of sales slips or sheets in place therein, and having a movable spring-actuated plate or follower adapted to bear against the bottom of the pack and exert an outward pressure thereon, of a transfer-sheet holder consisting of a pair of jaws operated to hold the transfer-sheet at one end, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a frame or holder provided with retaining-flanges for holding a pack of sales slips or sheets in place therein, and having a movable spring-actuated plate or follower adapted to bear against the bot tom. of the pack and exert an outward pressure thereon, of a transfer-sheet holder consisting of a narrow strip or plate confined loosely in place beneath a retaining-flange at the edge of the frame, against which it is forced by the outward pressure of the springactuated follower-plate, substantially as set forth.

The combination, with a frame or holder provided with retaining-flanges for holding a pack of sales slips or sheets in place therein, and having a movable spring-actuated plate or follower adapted to bear against the bottom of the pack and exert an outward pressure thereon, of a transfer-sheet holder consisting of a narrow strip or plate placed immediately beneath a retaining-flange at the edge of the frame, and having projections at its opposite ends fitting loosely within recesses in the sides of the frame, whereby it is permitted to have a limited amount of motion toward and from said flange, said strip or plate forming, in connection with said flange, a pair of jaws for holding the transfer-sheet at one end, and, being forced toward said flange, to hold the transfer-sheet by the outward pressure of the spring-actuated followerplate acting through the medium of the pack, substantially as set forth.
5.
