Description

(No Model.) 7
A. ROSA. SAD IRON.
No. 429,202. Patented June 3, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT ROSA, OF MILIVAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO J ENNIE A. ZINNS, OF SAME PLACE.
SAD-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,202, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed December 11, 1888. Serial No. 298,235. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT ROSA, of Mil waukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to that class of sadirons that are made hollow and heated by is burning charcoal or other suitable fuel therein, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a sad-iron constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section of the same.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the shell or body piece of my iron provided at one end with an upwardly=projecting lug B, and O is a cover hinged to said shell and provided with a pivoted latchD for engagement with said lug, the cover being shown as also provided with a series of depending lugs or ash-guards E and a handle F. The rear end of the shell is shown as provided with the usual draft-opening closed by ahinged plate H, having slots therein, that are in turn opened and closed by means of a sliding plate I, this construction being a common one in the art to which my invention relates. The sides of the shell A are provided with 3 5 longitudinal openings J and vertical slots K, and arranged within this shell are loose plates or dampers L, also provided with longitudinal openings M, designed to be brought in and out of register with the openings J in said sides of the shell to regulate the draft. The dampers L are also provided with vertical slots N, that engage guide lugs or bolts 0, extend ed in from the sides of the shell A, and lugs or bolts P extend outward from said dampers to slide in the slots K in said sides of the shell and engage segmental slots Q in plates R, that are pivoted upon the exterior of the shell and provided with thnmb-pieces S. The dampers L are also provided with inwardly-extended 5o longitudinal ribs T, that are preferably corrugated upon their edges, said ribs being arranged to come above and below the longitudinal openings M in said plates. A
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the segmental slot Q in each plate R is provided with a depression U, for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
By actuating the plates R the dampers L are raised or lowered accordingly as it may be desirable to bring the openings Min or out of register with the openings J in the shell. \Vhen the plates R are only moved far enough to permit the lugs or bolts P projecting from the-dampers L to engage the depressions U of the segmental slots in said plates, the dampers L will be retained in such position with relation to the longitudinal openings J in the shell A that only about one-half of these openings and the ones M in said dampers will be in register, thereby reducing the draft'upon the fuel within said shell.
The ribs T on the dampers L serve as guards to keep the fuel from close proximity to the sides of the shell, and thus I provide draftspaces, and sparks, ashes, &c., from said fuel are kept within the iron. By having the edges of the ribs corrugated there is little or no impediment to the draft, while at the same time it has been found that by this construction there is less resistance to the adjustment of the dampers.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hollow sad-iron having its sides provided with draft -openings, in combination with vertically-adjustable dampers for the openings having inwardly-extended ribs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A hollow sad-iron having its sides provided with draftopenings, in combination with vertically-adjustable dampers for the openings having inwardlyextended corrugated ribs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
3. A hollow sad-iron having its sides provided with draft-openings, in combination with sliding dampers for the openings, plates pivoted to the iron and provided with segmental slots, and alug or bolt projecting from 100 each damper to engage the slot in the adjacent pivoted plate, substantially as set forth.
4. A hollow sad-iron having its sides pro vided with draft Openings, in combination with sliding dampers for the openings, plates pivoted to the iron and provided with segmental slots having depressions, and a lug or bolt projecting from each damper to engage the slotin the adjacent pivoted plate, substantially as set forth.
5. A hollowsad-iron having its sides provided with longitudinal openings and vertical slots, in combination with sliding dampers having vertical slots therein, guide pins or bolts extended from the sides of the iron to engage the slots in the dampers, plates pivoted to the iron and provided with segmental slots, and lugs or bolts projecting from said dampers to play in the vertical slots in said ALBERT ROSA.
