ALBERT ROSA, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
SAD-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming pari: of Letters Patent No. 369,556, dated September 6, 1887.
Application filed February 7, 1887. Serial No. 226,784. (No model.)
To LZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT Rosa, of' Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXaet .description thereof.
My invention relates to that class of sadirons that are made hollow and heated by burning charcoal placed therein, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the aecompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a sad-iron constructed according toV my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the saine, taken on line x, Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a view showing a portion ofthe iron in elevation to illustrate its interior construction.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the hollow shell or body-piece of niy iron, provided with a smoothing-tace, B, and hinged cover C, the latter having a handle, D, and a pivoted latch-piece, E, that engages a lug, F, projecting up from said shell. I provide the sides of the shell A with longitudinal openings G and cover the usual rear opening, G', of said shell with a guide-plate, I-I.
The guide-plate II is provided with slots a and has operatively secured thereto a sliding plate, I, the latter being provided with slots b, arranged to be brought in and out of register with the ones a in said guide-plate. Bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the sides of the shell A, upon its interior, are recessed plates 4J, that serve as guides for vertical ears c, on
longitudinal dampers K, that correspond with the openings G in said sides of the shell. Each of the dampers K is provided with a horizontal web, d, that extends through the adjacent one of the openings G and comes flush with the corresponding outer side of the iron. Laterally extended from each damper K in an outward direction is a vertical lug, e, that is guided in a corresponding slot, f, cut in the adjacent side of the iron.
Bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the lugs e on the ldampers K are handles L, the latter being prevented from displacement by their engagement with studs g, projecting from said lugs.
Horizontal pins M are loosely arranged iu the grip portion of the handles and are surrounded by spiral springs N, that exert their pressure to hold said pins in engagement against the sides of the iron, said sides being preferably provided with grooves 7L, that serve as guides or seats for the points of the pins. By the frictional contact of the pinsNagainst the sides of the iron the dampers are held in their adjusted position. i
The dampers K are iiared inward toward the center ofthe iron, as best illustrated in Fig. 2, in order to delieet the air and canse it to strike the mass of fuel at the lowest possible point.
If found more desirable, I may provide the rear draft-opening, G', oi' the shell A with a damper similar to those described for the side openings.
By the construction above specified I am enabled to vary or entirelyshut oli' the lower draft-openings in a sad-iron ofthe class named for the purpose of increasing or diminishing the heat, as weli as to effect a saving in fuel when the iron is temporarily laid aside.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A hollow sad-iron having its sides provided with longitudinal openings, suitable guides, and vertical slots, in combination with longitudinal dampers provided with horizontal webs, vertical ears, and lateral lugs, and suitable handles for vertically adjusting said dampers, as set forth.
2. A hollow sad-iron having its sides provided with longitudinal openings, suitable guides, and vertical slots, in combination with longitudinal dampers provided with horizontal webs, vertical ears, and lateral lugs, suitable handles for vertically adjusting the dampers, and spring-pins arranged inthe handles to come in frictional contact with said sides of the iron, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim` the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of -Wis-` consin, in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT ROSA. Vtnesses:
H. G. UNDERWOOD, E. G. AsMUs.
