APPARATUS FOR THE TRANSMISSION OF POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,153, dated June 3, 1890. Application filed March '7, 1890. Serial No. 3%,610. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oanal Fulton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Transmission of Power, of which the following, with the accompanying drawing, is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus wherein brush wheels are used for transmitting power.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for adjusting such wheels for various speeds and firmly securing the brush-wheel in any desired position, and, further, to provide for reversing the direction of the power transmit-ted by such wheels.
In view of these objects my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts shown and described herein, and pointed out in the claims.
The drawing is an elevation, partly in section, of my improved apparatus.
Ais the driving-pulley, having an elongated turned hub B, which has a vertical movement in the bearings C C, said pulley also having a solid disk D, as shown. Said pulley, hub, and disk are preferably made integral with each other.
E is the counter-shaft, having mounted thereon the pulley F, from which runs a belt to the machine to be driven. There is also mounted on the counter-shaft a brush-wheel H, which wheel is designed to have frictional contact with the disk D. Agroove or keyway e is out along one side of the counter-shaft E, and the wheel II is keyed to said shaft by a key It in such manner as that said wheel may be shifted along the counter-shaft under the disk D to each side of its center, and will rotate the counter-shaft as the said wheel H is driven by the disk D.
M in the drawing represents the framework designed to support said shaft and wheels. To the framework is pivoted a lever G in the eye or hook of the strap I. Said lever embraces the upper end of the hub B, as shown at g, and to the outer end of said lever G is attached the arm K, which connects with the eccentric L. Said eccentric is secured to the frame-work M in any suitable manner. The eccentric L is provided with an arm N, rigidly secured thereto. To the outer end of the arm N is attached the vertical bar O by any suitable universal joint n. Said bar 0 is supported by suitable guides 0, which will allow a vertical and also a rotary motion of the bar O. At the bottom of the bar 0 is secured a handle P at right angles thereto. A lateral lever Q is secured to the bar 0. To the outer end of said lever Q is attached a rod S, having a yoke R on its opposite end, and which yoke carries a split ring 0, fitted in an annular groove 71/ on the hub h of the wheel H. The Wheel II is shown as having arubber, leather, or other suitable facing h' to increase the friction or adhesion of the wheel to the disk D. The driving-belt from the source of power runs over the pulley A.
In the practice of my invention by raising the bar 0 the eccentric L is turned up. This raises the outer end of the lever G and lifts the disk D free of the wheel II. Then by turning the handle P either to the right or left the wheel H is thrown to the right or left on the counter-shaft E. When said wheel H is located as desired, the bar 0 is again pulled down, which brings the disk D into contact with the said wheel H, and the power is transmitted to the counter-shaft and its attached pulleys. The nearer the wheel H is to the periphery of the disk D, the greater will be its speed. IVhen said wheel ll is to one side of the centerof the disk D, its movement will be in one direction, and by throwing the wheel H to the opposite side of the center of the disk D the movement will be in the opposite direction. In this manner the machine operated can be quickly and easily reversed. The eccentric I, will lock itself in any position in which it may be placed, and
which my device can be advantageously attached, and wherein a single lever ora screw can be adapted to engage with the brushwheel, so as to regulate the speed of the machine and cause a retrograde movement of the parts. Again, in machines where a reverse movement of parts is not desired my invention can be applied for merely changing the speed.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A coun ter-shaft, a bruslrwheel mounted on the counter-shaft and adapted to have longitudinal movement thereon, a pulley provided with a disk on one of its sides and an elongated turned hub upon its opposite side, an eccentric having an arm fixed thereto, a vertical bar having a lateral lever attached thereto, a rod with a yoke connecting saidlateral lever of the vertical bar with the brushwheel, a lever secured to the outer end of the hub of the abovementioned pulley and adapted to raise and lower said pulley, and an arm on the upper side of said eccentric and connecting the same with the lever that operates said disk, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an apparatus for the transmission of power, a pulleyprovided with a disk, a brush- Wheel, an eccentric, an arm rigidly secured thereto, a vertical bar attached to said arm and having a lateral lever attached thereto, a rod and a yoke connecting the lateral lever of the vertical bar to the brush-wheel, a lever adapted to raise and lower the aforesaid pulley and disk, and an arm connecting said lever with the eccentric, substantially as shown and described.
