SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,670, dated December 23, 188%,
Application filed July 1, 1884.
To 66% whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELI Z. WHITE, of Carrollton, in the county of Carroll and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Power Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my,,invention is to provide a simple, eflicient, and inexpensive hand-power mechanism for driving railway hand-cars or vehicles, or for operating light machinery;
The invention consists in a hand power mechanism constructed with a drive-wheel mounted on a mainshaft,which carries a loose rock'lever, which in turn connects by rods with reversely-set cranks of two shafts carrying drivewheels which act on the drivewheel of the main shaft, and also in mounting the crank-shafts yie'ldingly, so as to be self-adjusting to irregularities in the contact-faces of the friction drive-wheels, and so as to be adjustable to regulate the frictional contact of the wheels.
The invention consists, also, in various details of construction and combination of parts of the mechanism, all as hereinafter fully de scribed and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a railway hand-car with my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the connections between the hand-lever and the connectingrods. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 00 m, Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are diagram views illustrating modifications of the improvement.
By way of illustration I herein show and describe my improvement as applied to drive a railway hand-car; but it is applicable also to drive or operate sewing-machines, churns, and a large variety of light machinery by connected pulleys and belts or other. gearing.
The letter A indicates the frame of a railway hand-car, B B the opposite main wheels of the car, and O the guide-wheel of the car, which may run-either in front or behind the wheels 13. The wheels B B are mounted on an axle, D, which is journaled or held in suitable (No model.)
hangers, a, pendent from the frame A at each side of the car.
E E are two shafts, each of which is journaled at opposite sides of the ear in boxes or blocks F,which are fitted to slide in openings 5/ of the hangers G, which are fixed to the frame A in any suitable manner. Springs H are held in the openings g of the hangers G, so as to bear against the outer ends of the boxes F, and suitable plates with thumbscrews or set-screws I are provided for forcing the boxes inward to carry the peripheries of the friction-wheels J J, mounted, respectively, on the shafts E E, against the periphery of the drive-wheel K, which is fixed to the shaft or axle D of the car-wheels B B, and so that when the friction-wheels J J are revolved in the same direction against opposite points at the periphery of wheel K the latter will be turned to carry the car forward or backward. The adjustment of the boxes F by the springs H and screws I allows the friction-wheels J J to be pressed against the drivewheel K with more or less force, as required, depending 011 the weight of the car, the load carried by it, or the speed of travel desired; and the tension of the springs permits the boxes to yield or give way somewhat to compensate for any irregularity in the contact-surfaces of the three friction-wheels, and always insure a close driving contact of the wheels with each other. The meeting faces or peripheries of the friotionwheels will be covered with rubber or other suitable fabric, to prevent slip of the wheels on each other without driving effect. One or more hangerbraces, L, having a bearing for the shaft D and fastened to crossbars of the frame A, may be used at one or both sides of the driving-Wheel K, to prevent vibration of the parts. The shafts E E have, respectively, the reverselyset cranks 0 c, to which cranks the ends of the connecting-rods M M are journaled. These rods M M are connected to the arms of a lever, 0, at opposite sides of the shaft D and at equal distances from the shaft, and the lever 0 has an elongated bearing on the shaft, or on a bushing fitting loosely thereon, so that when the lever is rocked on the shaft the rods M M will turn the shafts E E, and with them the friction-wheels J J K, in the direction of their arrows, for moving the car, which may thus be run in either direction by working the lever.
To provide for changing'the lengths of the connecting-rods M M as the boxes F are moved along the slots 9, and maintain the connections of the rods M M with the lever O at the same points, and also the proper reverse positions of the cranks ee, I slot the ends of the rods, as at m, and fit loosely in the slots the blocks or boxes a, in which the wrist-pins o of the lever O are loosely fitted, and so that when the set-screws P, which pass through the edges of the rods against the blocks a, are loosened, the blocks may be shifted in the slots, as required, whereupon the blocks are again fastened by the screws I. (See Figs. 3 and 4.) Nuts p on the pins 0 hold the rods M M to the lever.
The lever O in Figs. 1 and 2 is arranged to be rocked backward and forward; but the diagram, Fig. 5, shows the lever adapted to work up and down on a fulcrum, O, fixed to the carframe, the arrangement of the friction driving-wheels and crank-shafts being the same as above described. The diagram view, Fig. 6, also shows a horizontal arrangement of the working-lever 0, but with the friction-wheels J J acting each upon its own driving-wheel K, one wheel K being provided on both the forward and hind axles for propelling a fourwheeledcar or vehicle The connections of the rods M M to the lever 0 and the cranks c e in Figs. 5 and 6 are to be substantially the same as above described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings. Intermeshingtoothed wheels or gearing may be substituted for the friction-wheels; but the latter are practically noiseless in action, and hence are preferred.
It will be seen that with the relative proportions shown of the wheels J J and the wheel K the latter will be revolved about three times for every revolution of the former,
whereby a rapid revolution of the shaft D may be secured with a slow movementof the working-lever.
in driving machinery it will be connected by belts and pulleys orgear-wheels with the shaft D, mounted with the lever, connecting- 'rods, cranked shafts, and friction-wheels in and belt to drive a churn or sewingmachine,
or'to do other light work.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A hand-power mechanism constructed with a drive-wheel mounted rigidly on a main shaft carrying a loosely-mounted rock-lever, and said lever being connected by rods with the reversely-set cranks of two shafts, each carrying wheels which act on the drive-wheel of the main shaft, substantially as shown and described.
.2. The combination, in ahand-power mechanism, of the shaft D, drive-wheel K, lever O, connecting-rods M M, cranked shafts E E, and drive-wheels J J, substantially as shown and described. 7
3. The combination, in a hand-powermechanism, of the shaft D, friction-wheel K, lever Q, connecting-rods M M, and cranked shafts E E, carrying the friction drive-wheels J J, said shafts E being mounted inboxes, al-
lowing the wheels J J to yield, substantially as shown and described.
at. The combination, with the shaft D and its drive-wheel K, of the oppositely-placed wheels J J, mounted on cranked shafts E E, which are journaled in boxes F F, fitted to slide in bearings of the frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
.3. The combination, with theshaft D, drivewheel K, and opposite wheels J J, mounted on shafts fitted to sliding boxes F F, as specified, of the springs H and means for compressing the springs on the boxes, substantially I as shown and described.
6. The combination, with the boxes F F and springs H, of the setscrews I, substantially as herein shown and described.
7 The combination, with the lever O, fitted loosely on the shaft D, and the cranked shafts E E, fitted in the sliding boxes F F, as specified, of the connecting-rods M M, slotted at m, and held to the lever at opposite sides of the shaft D by the adjustable blocks a, and means for adjusting the blocks,substantially as shown and described.
