UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE,
GABRIEL S. OSMUNDSON, OF RENVILLE, MINNESOTA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,151, dated J' une 3, 1890.
Serial No. 344,346. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIEL S. OsMUNDsON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Renville, in the county of Renville and State -of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to carcouplers; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my car-coupler attached to a car. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my coupler.
My coupler is automatic in two respects. It is a self-setter and self-coupler, and is described as follows:
A represents the front end of a car, to the lower face of which is attached my bumper B', which is provided with three front openings l), to receive the coupling-links b', and with three vertical openings b2, which pass entirely through the said bulk-head. In the said openings are fitted coupling-pins c, which pass down and hold the links b. Said pins The said bumper is provided with fulcrumed proj ections D, which rise from the upper face of said bulk-head and about equidistant between the perforations h2 and that part of the bulkhead which rests against the front end of the car A. Between these fulcrumed projections is pivoted a lever E, the front end of which is divided into three arms e, and the front ends of said arms terminate in pins, which pass through the perforations in the head of the coupling-pins c. In the rear end of said lever is secured a horizontal pin F, and to said horizontal pin are secured two side rods f, one on each end, with their rear ends pivoted in the ends of said pin and their front ends passing horizontally through said bulk-head and coming out at its front face, so that when the rear end of said lever E is down the front ends of said rod will project beyond the front face of said bulk-head, say, about six inches, and when the front arms of said lever E are down the front ends of the said rods will be retreated until they do not project beyond the face of said.bulkhead. To the rear end of said lever E and immediately in rear of the horizontal rod F is pivoted, vertically, a lockingrod G, provided with a locking-notch g, and on the top of the car is secured a lock g', provided with a locking-bar g2, made to stand forward by means of a spring and catch in the said notch g, and is also provided with a lever g3, by means of which the said bar g2 is withdrawn from the notch g, and when so withdrawn the weight of said rod G immediately throws the front arms of the lever E up and raises the coupling-pins c (see Fig. 2) and drives the side rods f forward, and the said coupler is set ready to automatically lock itself to the approaching car. The approaching car is provided with a coupler exactly similar to the one just described, the rod Gbeing up and locked. in place by the lock g. Consequently the arms c of the lever E are down, the coupling-pins are down, the links h are in place, and the front end of therodsF retreated into the bulkhead B, and when the bulkhead B reaches the bulk-head B the links b enter the front openings b, the side rods f are driven back, which throws the arms e and coupling-pins c, and thus secures the links, and at the same time the vertical rod G is thrown up and is locked by the lock g. It will be seen that I may use only one link, if desired, or I may use two or three, or even more, and I may construct my coupler with a lever having but one front arm and the bumper having but one front opening, the number of arms, pins, links, and openings not being material, the principle being the same; but I prefer to make the coupler with three links, so that in long and heavy trains Imay use three links near the engine, two farther back, land only one still farther back. Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a railroad-car, of the bumpers B B', each provided with the front openings ZJ, vertical openings b2, fulcrumed IOO projections D, lever E, pivoted in said fuioruln, its front end terminating in the arms e, horizontal pin F, secured in the rear end of said lever, side rods f, their rear ends pivoted to said horizontal pin and their front ends passing horizontally through the front end of the bumper, vertical rod G, pivoted to the rear end of said lever and provided with the locking-notch g, look g, secured on the top of the oar A and adapted to lock said rod G, Coupling-pins c, having perforated 'heads and attached to the said arms e, and coupling-links b', Working in openings b and adapted to be caught and looked by said pins, al1 substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
