Description

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE,
LOUIS IWI. F. PATUREAU, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ENVELOPED THREAD-CLEAWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,902, dated May 24, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, LoUIs MARIE Fnanors PATUREAU, of Paris, in the Empire of France, manufacturer, have invented a new and useful Thread-Protecting Clewdox; and I hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description ofthe same.
The invention relates to an improved mode Vention and the manner 1n which the same is ot' protecting sewing-thread or other yarn, when made up into a clew, from becoming` contaminated or soiled by continuous handling,
being wound oft', as often happens when uni winding thread from a skein. For this purpose I inclose each clew in a small capsule, box, or protecting-case, by preference made ot' cardboard, fitting round the clew and provided with a hole, through which is left protruding that end of the yarn that is situatedin the interior of the clew, thus allowingto wind ot't' any suitable quantityot' thread from the clew without fear of the thread becoming entangled.
The box or protector I prefer making in two halves, hollow semi-spheres, or shells, the rims or borders of which, being applied against each other, exactly tit together, so as fully to cover the clew inserted between them, the said rims bein g further glued, or in any other suitable manner tixed together, by preference by gluing all round the line ot'junction of the two semi-capsules or shells a small strip of paper bearing the manufacturers trade-mark or any other suitable indication or ornament, while in order to allow of examining the yarn or thread of the clew while in the interior of the capsule or protector this latter is provided with one or moreholes suitably situated for that purpose.
I prefer making the clewboxes or threadprotectors of card-board, but stout paper, thin wood, sheet metal, guttapercha, leather, or other similar suitable materials might likewise be made use of for that purpose.
Having thus described the nature of my inexecuted, I declare that I do not intend to restrain or restrict myself to any particular shape, size, or material of which my clew-looxes or thread-protectors are to be made, nor to the manner in which the same may be made-viz., by hand or by any suitable punching' or other machinery.; but what I consider to be novel and original is inclosin g clews of sewingthread or other yarn in asuitable cover ot' card-board or other similar resisting material for protecting the thread from becoming contaminated, and allowing at the same time a better winding oft' of the thread or yarn inclosed in such box or clew-protector.
I shall therefore state my claim, as follows:
As a new article of manufacture, thread or other yarn prepared for the market or trade into clews confined in capsules made in two shells glued together by a strip or band ot' paper, one of said shells being provided with one or more holes, in the manner and for
