Description

(No Model:) S
H. ALBIN. UMBRELLA OR PARASOL FRAME.
No. 4281661. Patented May 27, 1890.
WITNESSES. INVENTOR. Gfiw/ awn" M 41.! W in UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN ALBIN, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
UMBRELLA OR PARASOL FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,661, dated May 27, 1890.
Application filed October 11, 1888. Serial No. 287,867. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN ALBIN, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella and Parasol Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to frames for umbrellas and sunshades or parasols; and it consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The peculiar features of my umbrella-frame are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my umbrella-frame, showing it almost wholly closed; and Fig. 2 is a view, partly -in perspective and partly in section, showing the position of the ribs and stretchers when my frame is open.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout.
1 indicates the stick, having ahandle 9 and a top 10 shod in the usual mode.
2 2 are the ribs; 3 3, the rib braces or stretchers.
4 is the top notch fastened to the stick.
5 is the runner.
6 is the spring to pass through a-slot in 5 to hold the umbrella open, and 7 is a similar spring to hold it shut.
In my umbrella or parasol frames the inner ends of the ribs 2 2 are attached to the runner 5 instead of to the fixed top notch 4, as in ordinary frames, and the rib-braces 3 have their inner ends attached to the fixed top notch 4 instead of to the runner 5, as is usual. The out-er ends of the rib-braces are jointed to the ribs at some suitable point 8. The cover of my umbrella or sunshade is placed over the. outside of the stretchers to their connection with the ribs and then along the inside of the ribs to their free ends.
lNhen umbrellas made on my frames are closed, the wet side will be inward, and parasols made on it can be carried cane fashion and will be an attractive fashion novelty.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the solid stick c011- structed in one piece, a top notch having a permanently-fixed engagement at the upper portion of said stick relatively to the handle portion, and spring- catches 6 and 7, arranged at suitable intervals upon said stick, of a runner 5, ribs secured to said runner and rib-braces secured to the said ribs and proj ecting upwardly and secured to the top notch, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
HERMAN ALBIN.
