UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS HIPVELL, OF ALLEGHENY, ASSIGNOR TO THE PITTSBURGH BRASS COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
HARP AND HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,607, dated May 27, 1890. Application iled May 21,1889. Serial No. 311,592. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS I-IIPWELL, a resident of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to hangin g-frames for lamps.
It -is well known that fordifferent styles of lamps the simplest form of frame or holder consists in a hanger to be secured to the ceiling or a suitable bracket, and having at the base thereof a ring in which the body of the lamp fits. This form of hanger requires, however, that the whole body of lthe lamp shall be raised and lowered into the ring, and consequently necessitates the formation of the hanger longer than is desirable, and, besides ths, when lifting a lighted lamp to place it in or withdraw it from the holder, there is liability of the llame, on account of the tilting` of the lamp, striking against the chimney and causing the cracking orbreaking of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple form of lamp-holder in which this isv not necessary, and yet in which the lamp can be more easily secured in place, and from which there is no liability of the lamp dropping out until intentionally moved.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved holder supporting the lamp. Fig. 2 is a side View of the holder. Fig. Bis a top view showing the supporting-ring. Fig. 4t is a perspective view of the supporting-ring, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the latch or engaging de- Vice.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
The hanger a is shown formed of the wire bent to-proper shape, and having a hook or loop b at the upper end thereof to engage with a suitable hook or loop secured to the ceiling or bracket. At the base of said hanger a is the ring c, this ring being formed in two parts or sections d e. The two sections are divided at a point beyondthe greatest diameter of the ring, such as that formed through the point-s at which the hanger ct is secured to the section d, as at f f, leaving beyond such -points the extensions g h, said extensions g h passing beyond the central line of the body of the lamp, or beyond the line of largest diameter thereof, so that when the ring o is opened there is no liability of the lamp dropping out of the hanger, it being held within the same by said extensions 'g h until the lamp is lifted slightly, bringing a part of less diameter in line with the opening in the ring, and so raising it free of the'ring or until the lamp is lifted sidewise from the ring. The section e of the ring is pivoted to the section Cl, as at k, at the end of the extension h, before referred to, and it engages with the end of the extension g at the other end of the section d by means of a latch device, as at Z m. The latch device is formed of two parts Z m, which are counterparts of each other, each having the tongue o, with inclined face fa, shoulder p, and recess o", so that when the two parts are brought together the inclined face 'n on the section e will pass over the inclined face n on the section d until its tongue o falls into the recess r, the tongue o on the section d fitting into a like recess in the section e, and the shoulders p p bearing against each other, and so forming a lock to hold the two parts or sections of the ring together. The weight of the lamp resting on the section e will of course hold the two parts of the latch together until the section e is raised, so disenga-ging the shoulders p p.
As the lamp-bodies are, as is well known, formed with different shoulders, curves, or tapers from the largest portion thereof downwardly when the lamp is' resting within the ring, the ring will engage with one of these shoulders or annular faces, as shown, and will so support the lamp within the hanger, and the weight of the lamp will be supported by the two sections of the ring, the pressure of the lamp upon the section e holding the latch Z 'm in engagement.
In case it is desired to remove the lampall that is necessary is to raise the free end of the section e slightly, so opening the latch, when the sectionl e can swing on its hinges 7s IOO out of the way. There isy however, no liability of the lmnp-bodyfelling` ont of the section J of the ring, as the two extensions g 71/ beyond the eenterof the lmnp will hold it in place until the lmnp is raised slightly, bringing :i narrower portion thereof in line with the ring, when the lmnp een be,\\'itlnlrz1\\'n wit-hout the necessity of lifting its entire body above the ring, and as soon as the narrower portion is brought in line with the ring' the lmnp-bodyean be removed horizontally. I :un thus enabled to provide t simple Ianni holder, in which the lamp-body is properly supported, and one from which it mn be easily withdrawn without the necessity of lifting` the lmnp-body entirely through the ring, und from which there is no liability of the lmnp fallinfb)l when the two sections are parted.
What I elniln as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In :L lmnp-holder, the Combination of the hanger (L and the ringc,3for1ned of the section. d, secured to the hanger a and having the extensions g 7L beyond the central line of said ring, :ind the section e, hinged to one extension of the section (Z and connected to the other extension by the latch Z m, having the tongues o, vinelined faces n, shoulders p, and recesses r, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said THOMAS llirwELL, have hereunto set my hand.
THOMAS lIIPlVELL.
