J. J. HOOKER. WRAPPING TWINE HOLDER.
No. 428,561. Patented May 20, 1890.
Inventor fittest UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES J. HOOKER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
WRAPPING-TWINE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,561, dated May 20, 1890. Application filed June 6, 1889- Serial No. 313,267. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES J. HOOKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrapping-Twine Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to twine-holders, its object being to produce a convenient article for store-service in which a ball of twine is held ready for use.
To this end the invention consists in a supporting frame or yoke with yielding sides adapted to be secured to a base or other support, and provided with a pintle-rod extending between and through the yielding side supports, having a head at one end extremity and a screw-nut at the other, whereby by turning the screw-nut the yielding sides may be compressed against the ends of the roll of twine axially mounted on the pintle between the side supports, and thus be held (by the friction of the sides) against overrunning.
Mechanism embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View of the twine-roll mounted in a compressible yoke-frame exhibited as an adjunct to a paper-roll holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the twine-roll with a hollow tube-core.
Referring now to the drawings, A designates the twine-roll, which for the purpose of my invention is preferably wound by the usual traverse motion into the form of a cylinder, enlarging by successive layers, so that by the consumption of the twine in use the diameter of the roll is reduced uniformly without otherwise altering the axial length or cylindrical form.
The holding-frame consists, essentially, of
I two side supports B B, supported upon a suitable base D, in which an axial rod or spindle O is journaled. The cylindrical twine-roll A is formed upon a wood or paper tube f, extending through the same as an axial core. The rod C is provided with a head 0' at one end and a thumb-nut c screwed upon the other,
joining the side supports and inserted through the hollow core of the twine-roll; and this is preferred for the reason that the rolls can then be produced complete, ready for mounting, as articles of manufacture provided with the hollow axis, and may then be more easily and conveniently applied to the holdingframes by way of renewal from time to time.
As exhibited in Fig. 1, the standards B are preferably formed as parts of a yoke-frame B B B, bent from a single strip of elastic metal into the inverted-U form shown, perforated at the laterally-turned-out feet I) for holding-screws 8. By tightening the thumbscrew 0 the elastic sides B of the yoke are compressed toward each other against the ends of the roll A or the projecting ends of its core to produce the desired friction, which may be varied to suit.
Theconstruction forms a very convenient adjunct to an ordinary paper-roll holder, and may be so attached. V
WVhile the roll prepared upon the hollow core as described is to be preferred, it will be obvious that a hollow center can be formed in the ball without such core, and that the ball so formed may be used as herein indicated. .The supporting-frame may also be attached as a bracket to a wall.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A stand or holder for a twine-roll, consist-- ing of a strip of metal bent to yoke form, with its ends constituting feet, whereby it may be secured to a suitable support, in combination with an axial spindle for supporting the roll extended through the sides of the supporting-strip, and provided with a head at one end and a screw-nut at the other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JAMES J. HOOKER.
