lle it known that I, HEBER DONALDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of \Vashington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cashltegisters and Mon ey-Drawer Protectors 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in cash-registers; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts,

whereby a tally is kept of all sales and cash received, and in combination with a moneydrawer the latter cannot be opened without operating the mechanism of the register, all as will be hereinafter fully described.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a counter and inoneydrawer,

showing my device attached. Fig. 2 is a ver tical cross-sectional view of my device, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a casing, which is providcd with a hinged cover (it, having a glass 1') and an opening 0. This cover and the front portion d of said casing are secured to each other, and when the cover is raised the front portion is raised also, and the latter has a lock (1, which secures the cover when closed. \Vithin this casing is arranged a roller (i havin g end flanges, against which presses a spring 6, that is secured at one end to the side wall of the casing. The shaft f, on which this flanged roller revolves, has its bearing in the side walls of the casing. Near said roller and within said casing is arranged a transverse block or table 9, having a flat surface 71 on its upper face, and over which the tape or strip of paper t passes.

Toward the forward end of the casing and within the same are arranged two transverse rollers jj, which are covered with rubber is, or these rollers can be serrated, and the journals of which have their bearings in the side walls of the casing, as shown in the drawings.

Those bearings are in the form of a vertical slot, and at each end of the lower shaft or journal is a coil-spring Z, which is connected at its upper end to the casing or upper shaft, and which serves to keep by contraction both rollers in closeengageinent with one another.

On one end of the journal of the upper roller j is secured a toothed wheel m, the teeth of which are engaged by a spring-pawl n and a check-spring or retainingpawl 0. The pawl n is secured to a lever 22, which is pivoted in a bracket q, secured to the casing, and the free end of this lever has its play in a guide-bracket 7", also secured to the casing, and a spring .9 is secured by one end to said lever, as at '6, while the other end thereof is secured to said casing, and these parts just mentioned are inclosed within a compartment u, (see Fig. 3,) and are thus hidden from view. The forward end of this coinpartinent it has a vertical slot or opening -v, through which the handle 20 of the lever aforesaid projects. This handle curves forward and downward, and the lower portion is provided with a sleeve :20, in the lower end of which is journaled a roller 1 while the body is provided with vertical side slots 5, through which pass a bolt or rivet, that also passes transverselythrough the lower end of said lever, and which connects said sleeve with its roller to the pivoted hand-lever. This casing is set or secured upon a counter 13, and beneath the latter is arranged a tape or strip receptacle C, the interior of which communicates with the interior of the casing by a vertical neck portion a and a slot 1) in the forward end of the casing aforesaid,and extending from the mouth of this slot 1) is an inclined guide-board c, which, when the paper leaves the twin rollers j j, guides said strip of paper into the slot 1) and into the recep tacle below.

In combination with the above-described device, I use a money-drawer D, the same of the usual. well-known construction, with a very slight change, by securing to the upper edge of one of the sides of said drawer a metal plate or track (1 and the front thereof I bevel, as at e, for ei'igaging the roller in the lower end of the pivoted handle, whereby said money-drawer and the pivoted lever act simultaneously when the money-drawer is pulled out or opened, all as will he presently explained.

From the following description it will be readily observed that my device not only keeps account of sales made and cash received, but is also an excellent protector for the cash-drawer, as the same cannot be drawn out;- without operating the mechanism within the casing above mentioned.

The operation of my combined cash-register and money-drawer protector is as follows: It will be seen that the strip of paper '2 is wound upon the flanged roller. The free end then passes over the table 1 and directly beneath the slot and glass plate I) in the cover, thence between the twin rollers j j, and finally down through the slot 1') in the front end of the casing and into the receptacle 0, beneath the counter. The salesman or operator, when a sale is made, simply records the amount on the strip with a lead-pencil or the like, after which he pulls out the moneydrawer to deposit the cash, and in so doing the inclined edge e of said drawer comes in contact with the lower end of the pivoted lever 2), when the latter by its roller or lower end rides upon the upper surface of said money-drawer, and consequently raising said lever, when the same will turn on its pivot, the free end thereof by its spring-tooth or turning the toothed wheel m the distance of one tooth, when the check-spring 0 will hold it in place, at the same time the upper twin roller and lower twin roller are turned, thus drawing the strip between them and over the table, thus passing the last-recorded number from the slot in the lid and beneath the glass, where said number can be readily inspected. After the drawer is closed the spring s forces down the lever and brings the lower end thereof in front of the drawer, ready for the next operation.

Should the drawer be opened and no penoil-mark be on the slip of paper, the blank space thereof readily indicates that said drawer has been opened and no record made on said slip.

\Vith my device it is impossible for one to tamper with the money-drawer without the lever and rollers with the strip being operated, thereby providing an excellent protector for said drawer, and it will be further seen that the strip passes entirely out of sight, conveyed to the box below, from which place it can be removed by unlocking the cover of the casing" and. the sales made counted, and leaving the last sales beneath the glass, it desired, and the slotted sleeve aforesaid serves to adjust the pivoted arm or lever to the money-drawer, thus providing" a means for so doing when there is a difference of thickness in store-counters.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a device of the character described, the combination of the casing A, having a separate compartment n, the rollers j j, springs 7, roller 0, provided with the spring 6, tape 1', receptacle 0, the lever 17, pivoted to the side of the casing, springs, connected to said lever by one end and by the opposite end to the casing, spring-pawl a, toothed wheel m, secured to one of the roller-shafts, retainingpawl 0, slotted sleeve 00, attached to the lower end of the lever and provided with a roller 3 and the money-drawer D, having the beveled portion 6, adapted to engage said roller, as and for the purpose set forth.
