No. 428,181. Patented May 20, 1890.

\VILLIAM RANDEL, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, AND CHARLES A. FRENCH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WINDOW-BEAD FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,181, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed February 4, 1890. Serial No. 339,147. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM RANDEL, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, and CHARLES A.
FRENCH, residing at Boston, Massachusetts, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parting-Strip Fasteners for \Vindow-Frames, of which the following is a specification, referonce being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to an improved device for removably securing the partingstrips of window-frames in place in such a [5 manner that they can be conveniently and quickly taken out when desired.
To this end we provide the parting-strips with undercut recesses and provide pivoted latches or buttons to enter said recesses when turned in the proper position, said latches or buttons being attached to metallic plates set in the track of the inner sash flush with the surfaces thereof and being recessed for the reception of the said latches or buttons, 2 5 so that the latter are also flush with said surfaces. Thus the fastening devices will be entirely out of sight when the inner sash is in place; but when the said sash is removed the latches or buttons can be turned out of the recesses in the parting-strips, thus leaving the latter free to be taken out to remove the outer sashes.
111 the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of awindow-frame illustrative of ourin- 5 vention, the inner sash being removed; and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views showing the construction of our fastener more fully.
A denotes the window frame, and B the upper outer sash, the inner sash being omitted.
C is the inner bead, which is removably secured in place preferably by screws or nails 0 with removable heads, and D is the track for the inner sash, the latter being readily taken out when the bead C is removed.
E denotes the parting-strip, provided with one or more recesses e, opposite each of which in the track D and flush with the surface of said track is set a plate f, provided with a re cess g,which receives a latch or button 71, pivotally attached to said plate, with its outer surface flush with the face thereof and with the surface of the track D, the latter being recessed atd beyond the plate f for the reception of the end of said latch or button prcj ecting beyond said plate.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that when the latch or button g is turned down, as shown in full lines, Fig. 2, its outer end will enter the undercut recess 6 and hold the parting-strip in place; but when said button is turned out of said recess, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, said strip will be free to be removed from its slot to permit the outer sash to be taken out for cleaning or other purposes.
\Ve claim A parting -strip fastener consisting of a plate to be set in the track of the inner sash and a pivoted latch or button let into the outer face of said plate, with its free end proj ecting beyond the same to engage a recessin the parting-strip when turnedinto proper position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix oursi gnatu res in presence of two witnesses.
