SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 428,090, dated May 20, 1890.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH GRAMKE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residingV at Cincinnaii, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Household Furniture, of which the following is a specilication.

My invention relates to articles of household-furniture-such as bureaus, washstands, dressing-cases, hat-racks, &c.-its object being to providea convenient novelty especially useful as applied to dressing-cases, hat-racks, and the like.

The invention consists in the combination, with a drawer of such dressing-case or other piece of furniture, of an auxiliary receptacle located beneath the surface of the piece 'of furniture, and connecting mechanism whereby upon opening the drawer, the lid of the auxiliary receptacle is opened, and by closing the `drawer the lid of the auxiliary receptacle is closed.

It also consists in a semicircular pivoted drawer which maybe opened by drawing out either side, and, lastly, in the combination,

with such semicircular pivoted drawer, of two auxiliary surface receptacles arranged at the sides and opened or closed alternately by opposite movements of the drawer.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-A Figure lis a perspective elevation of my invention applied in a preferred mode to a hat-rack; Fig. 2, a partial perspective view of same, showing the drawerand the corresponding receptacle open. Fig. 3 is a plan View with the top removed, showing the relative position and attachments of the drawer and the receptacles; Fig. 4, a detail vertical crosssection showing the construction of the receptacle and its guides and the position and engagement of the elevating-flange upon the drawer; and Fig. 5, a rear View of the drawer, showing its elevating-flange.

Referring now to the drawings, A designates the hat-rack or dressing-case to which the invention is applied; B, the drawer; C, the iiat top or table of the hat-rack. The construction is in the usual form and requires no special description, excepting as hereinafter specified.

The special construction and arrangement of the drawer and of the auxiliaryreceptacles,

as herein illustrated and described, is preferred with aview'to symmetry of design and general convenience, but may be varied.

The drawer B is semicircular in form and held by vertical pivots p at the center of the front panel. Thus pivoted it swings outward into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which one half is exposed, or into a diametricallyopposite position, in which the oppositehalf is exposed. It may therefore be provided with a central radial partition fc, dividing it into two compartment-s.

At either side of the space occupied bythe drawer I arrange openings through the flat top or table C, provided with hinged covers a, which when closed lie flush with said table and constitute part of the general surface.

Beneath the covers and of a size corresponding with the openings through the table I arrange boxes or receptacles b, secured upon guide-pedestals c, projecting downward vertically in guide-blocks d, secured to the bottom of the drawer-casing and projecting upward to the bottom of the receptacle Z) as a support when in its lowest position. The guide-pedestals c stand in their guide-blocks d at the side of the drawer and engage with the drawer by means of a lateral lugprojecting into a corresponding slot in the wall of the drawer, or, as shown in the illustration, by means of a ange e upon the drawer projecting into an open slot in the face of the pedestal c. The flange e is horizontal toward the ends of the drawer, but is inclined upward toward the mid-point in such relation that when the drawer is closed the guide-pedestal c will stand at its lowest point, and as the drawer is opened the guide-pedestal will be carried upward, lifting the receptacle b to its elevated position. In rising the receptacle Z9 carries up the cover a, which turns on its hinges into the position shown in Fig. 2, and as the extent of elevation of the receptacle is made to correspond with the thickness of the cover b the cover will stand vertical, as shown, and is again closed by shutting the drawer.

As arranged in the illustration given, the hat-rack is provided with two receptacles placed at the sides of a marble center slab f, and the liange e, arranged upon the drawer, as shown in Fig. 5, will elevate one or the IOO other receptacle, according as one side or the other of the drawer B is drawn ont. A single receptacle may be arranged, however, occupying either of the positions indicated by dotted lines in Fig.

The attachment ot the auxiliary receptacle may be made to an ordinary sliding drawersuch as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3-,-by the same means.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a dressing-table or similar article of furniture, the combination of a drawer opening horizontally, an auxiliary receptacle adjacent thereto and opening vertically through the table, a side flange upon the drawer, and engaging' attachments upon said receptacle, whereby the opening of the drawer causes said receptacle to open, substantially as set forth.

2. In a dressing-table or similar article of furniture, the combination of a horizontal selnieircular drawer centrally pivoted and provided with a peripheral inclined flange, and a receptacle opening through the tabletop adjacent to the drawer and engaging said iiange and adapted to be raised and opened thereby through and by the opening of the drawer, substantially as set forth.

3. In a dressing-table or similar article ot furniture, the combination of a semieircular drawer centrally pivoted in the drawer-opening at its front edge and swinging open upon its pivot in either direct-ien, and one or more auxiliary receptacles opening upwardly at the sides of the drawer, having covers forming part of the tableesurface, a flange or flanges upon the curved sides of the drawer, and engaging attachments upon said receptacles, whereby the receptacles are opened by the opening of the drawer, substantially as set forth.
