ATTACHMENT FOR FOUNTAINvPENS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,959, dated May 13, 1890.

To LZZ whom, if may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS BERNHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomsburg, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in attachments for fountain-pens.
The object of the present invention is to provide a pen for fountain-pens of simple, inexpensive, and durable material, that will insure a regular and positive iiow of ink. Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a pen in which the ink may be fed to the nibs from either above or below to produce either heavy or light writing.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and point-ed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a pen constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the position of the part when the ink is fed below the nibs.
In the accompanying drawings, A designates a pen of ordinary configuration, constructed, preferably, of gold, and provided intermediate of the ends with a transverse slot a, through which is passed a feed-tongue B, which is constructed of suitable material, preferably gold, or gold and rubber, and arranged vupon both sides of the pen A and at opposite ends thereof, and is adapted to convey ink from the reservoir of a fountain-pen and feed it to the nibs of the pen A. The feed-tongue B is provided intermediate of its nibs with a bend b, which lies in the transverse slot a, whereby the front or feeding portion b', which conforms slightly to the configuration of the nibs of the pen and extends down to the point, is adapted to lie upon one side of the pen A, and the rear or conveyer portion h2, which is slightly narrower than the front portion b', is adapted to lie upon the other. The end of the conveyer portion h2 is bent upon itself or upon the other side of the pen A to form a loop b3, which permits access of the ink to the space between the conveyer portion h2 and the pen A and serves to draw the ink therein, and also serves to attach the feed-tongue B to the pen. The ink passes from the space between the conveyer portion h2 and the pen A to the space between the feeding portion and the pen through an opening h4, formed in the bend b. The feed-tongue is inserted through the transverse slot ct and then the loop b3 is formed, and the feed-tongue may be arranged to bring the feeding portion ZJ either above or below the nibs to vary the iiow of the ink.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, op eration, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.

The combination of a pen provided near its middle with a transverse slot and a feedtongue constructed of a single piece and eX- tending the entire length of the pen, and provided about midway its length with a bend arranged in said slot and dividing the tongue into two portions, one portion being arranged on one side of the pen and the other port-ion lying on the opposite side of the pen, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a pen provided near its middle with a transverse slotl and a feedtongue constructed of a single piece, and having at its rear end a loop to receive ink and about midway of its ends a bend provided with an opening, and dividing the tongue into two portions arranged upon opposite sides of the pen, substantially as described.
