Description

P. NAYLOR. GROOVING AND SIZING MINIE BALLS.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER NAYLOR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GROOVING AND SIZING MINIE BALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,786, dated. May 17, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER NAYLOR, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for? Grooving and Sizing Mini-Rifle Balls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a plan of my machine, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
The nature of my said invention consists in a revolving wheel combined with a curved.
gage that is nearer to thesaid wheel at the delivery end than at the point of entrance, where the balls are introduced, and by the rolling motion brought to a uniform size and grooved by the action of said revolving wheel and stationary gage, and, combined with this equalizing and grooving mechanism, I introduce a revolving feed-plate, that conveys the, balls to the sizing and grooving parts.
In the drawings, a is a vertical shaft, pro pelled by suitable mechanism. I have shown gear-wheels b b, a shaft, 0, and a crank, 01, for
this purpose. -The shaft-a projectsthrough the bed 6 and is fitted with a wheehf, that .is turned very accurately and has projecting ribs around its eurvedsides, which ribs are of a size and shape corresponding to the grooves to beformed in the Mini balls. g-is a curved gage attached to the bed e, and adjustable, so
that it will be distant from the periphery of the wheelf at the nearest point the exact distance required for the'diameter of the Mini ball, and this gage may be provided with ribs toward the wheel f, corresponding, in shape and position to such ribs on said wheel f.
If, now, Mini balls,.resting with their base on the bed 0, be passed in regularly between the' wheelfandgage gsaid balls will be compressed and brought to a perfect size while rolled along in said space, and will be delivered therefrom perfectly uniform, and this operation may be performed upon Mini balls either cast or formed with or without grooves around them. In the one instance the grooves will be made entirely by the operation of my mechanism, and in the other instance the grooves will be thoroughly trued, and in both cases the diameter of the ball, if too large, will be brought to the exact size. v
In order to supply the balls more rapidly to this equalizer than they could be entered by hand, I make use of the feeding-plate h, rotated by the belt i or otherwise, and k is a stationary rim extending from the gage g and secured at the ends to the bed e. The surface ofthis bed 0 and feeding-plate h are level with each other, and theattendant places the Mini balls on their bases, point upward, and presses them out toward the rim 7c, near which they travel, and-are carried by the rotation of h to the entrance of the space between f and g to be equalized and grooved, as aforesaid.
'Ihe red circles in Fig.1 illustrate the position of the Mini balls, and the red lines in Fig. 2 showa ball between the wheel f and gage g. I do not claim equalizing Mini balls by a rolling motion, nor do I claim the operation of milling employedin coining, but by my wheel and gage I amenabled to equalize and groove Mini balls with greater rapidity and precision than by any previous mechanism, and there is no risk of any variation in the size in consequence of any wear in the parts, and the difficulties heretofore experienced with dies for equalizing, or cutters for trueing, or molds for accurately casting, are .all avoided, and I am enabled to groove such Mini'balls in the act of equalizing, thus entirely avoiding the difl icnlty heretoforeexperienced of casting or pressing such grooves in the balls.
I do not claim-compressing balls between a revolving and curved stationary surface, as
globular balls have been prod need from astripof lead by such a device, as in. the patent of I. Brufl', January 4, I813; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The wheel f and gage g, fitted, as specified, for equalizing the size of Mini balls, o-r for simultaneously grooving and equalizing such balls, as specified.
2. The feeding-plate h and ring k, in combination with the wheelf and gage g, for thepurposes and as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 24th day of- December, 1863. PETER NAYLOR. Witnesses:
LEMUEL W. SERRELL, THOS. GEO. HARoLI).
