To a/ZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. Rrr'rnn HOUSE, of Norristown, county of Montgomery,
and State of Pennsylvania,have invented'an.
Improvement in Molding Machinery, of which the following' is a specification.
My invention has reference to molding ma-vv chinery; and it consists of certain improvem ents,which are fullyset forth in the following Vspecification and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form`a part thereof.
.My invention has particular .reference to machines especially adapted for casting car# 1 wheels, and embodies a construction in which the mold is formed of metal and is provided with mechanism whereby it may be rotated' Vduring the 4admittance of the molten metal to the mold. Furthermore, the mold is combined With a truck in such a manner that after the wheel has been cast it may be liberated from the mold and conveyed upon the truck to the rolling-mill or other apparatus for further treatment. The mold is made inl several parts, which are relatively movable, so that when brought together in operativeposition they form a tight mold excellently adapted to receive and hold the iluid metal until it solidifies sufficiently to be selfsustaining.
lVhile my invention isparticularly adapted to the casting of car-wheels, it may nevertheless be applied to various articles.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved molding apparatus, taken on line 0c a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same. Y Fig. 3 is a side'elevation of same, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the truck in the act of conveying the cast ingot from the molding-machine to the rolling-mill.
A is the truck-frame proper, and is provided with wheels, which run upon the two rails B B. This truck supports lthe central part C of the mold, which is formed of metal, and is rotated' by a shaft Z, which connects with thev gear Lari-angeli" below the truck. The part C, being heavy, is supported upon ball-bearings c', which permits its ready -rotation. Thepart C of the mold is provided with vertical projections c about its periphery.
Fncircling the mold part C is an annular..
ring portion D, which is adapted to be adjusted vertically upon the part C. The annular part D is provided with vertical grooves d, which receive the vertical projections 'c of the central part C, and thereby insure its being rotated with the part C during the casting operation. Arranged above the annular part' D and the central part C is lthe cap or coverE, which isprovided with a centralropening F, for receiving the metal, and an annular guidlng-rim e.
When the casting operation is taking place, the cap E restsV upon the annular part D. and rotates with it. The cap E may be raised or lowered by .the vertically-movable paris G, which are provided'with curved grooves g, in which the annular rim or ange c of the cap iE works. 'lhese parts G are guided in vertical guides H, and are movable vertically by means of cranks D and links M, the said cranks being secured-to' a shaft P and rocked by a hydraulic or steam engine R and crank or arm Q, connected to the piston-rod. The
annular part D is raised or lowered by means of vertically-m ovable arms l, carrying at their upper ends rollers fi, which press against the under side of the said part D and While holding it in a raised position permit it tobe vreadily rot-ated. These parts I are reciprocated vertically by means of links M and the cranks O. The construction is such thatV when the parts G are raised, the parts I-are lowered, thereby raising the cap E entirely clear of the ingot and lowering the annular part'D, so that it may rest upon the carriage,
as shownin Fig. 4. lVhen this is done, the v carriage, with the ingot U, may run along the` railway B and bevdelivered to the rollingi mill.
During the casting operation the 1noldis to be rotated, as before explained, and this is accomplished by making the gear L meshV with a gear L', secured to a shaft J, journaled in the pit and adapted to be rotated by a hand-wheel K-or other "suitable means. In a molding-machine, the combination of a truck-A, a central mold part C, supported thereby, an annular movable part D, arranged about the part C and movable vertically thereon, a vertically-movable capE, adapted v to restA upon the annular part D during the casting operation, in which the internal surfaces ot the parts C D E are formed to correspond to the shape of the article to be cast, power devices for raising and lowering the parts D and E, and means to rotate the mold parts during the casting operation.
