C.. W. REEVES.
, SQUARE. No. 427,113.. Patented May 6, 1890.
Lvl-5:3.
E'i [in UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES TV. REEVES, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO VILLARD C. MONTGOMERY, OF SAME PLACE.
SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,113, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed July 10, 1889. Serial No.3l'7,025. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. REEVES, of Boston, in the county of Suolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and 5 useful Square, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inwhich- Figure l is a side and Fig. 2 an end View of my ne7 square, and Fig. 3 a sectional view 1o on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Hitherto squares have been made by riveting a metal blade in a Wooden handle, and also of metal angle-pieces to an edge of an arm of which a metal plate has been brazed 15 or soldered. Squares thus made are apt to become untrue or broken, the latter class being particularly liable to have the edge-plate broken oi.
The object of my invention is to produce a zo square which is strong enough to withstand the ordinary hard usage to which squares are subject without becoming untrue or broken.
My invention is the square herein described and claimed. A,
In the drawings, dist-he angle-piece, and b the ed geplate, the angle-piece being formed with tenons l on that edge which is to receive the edge-plate, and the edge-plate being formed with mortises 2 to receive the tenons l. The parts d yand b are readily died out of sheet 3o material. Tenons 1 and mortises 2 should be formed for a driving iit, and it is desirable to slightly upset the endsof the tenons. When the parts are thus secured together, the square is iinished up. The ends of the arms of the 35 angle-piece may be beveled, if desired, and its arms may be of definite Widths to adapt them for measures. It is desirable to make the overhang` of the edge-plate of definite Widths to adapt it for a measure; but all this will be 4o readily understood by those skilled in the art Without more particular description.
Squares thus constructed I have found to be exceedingly strong and durable.
What I claim is- 4 5 The improved square herein described, made up of angle-piece o and edge-plate b, the parts a and b being inortised and tenoned together, substantially as and for the purpose Set forth.
. CHARLES W. REEVES. Witnesses:
