SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,086, dated May 6, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HARRY T. JONES, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash Indicators and Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal section at line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the drawer open. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the drawer closed. Fig. 4 is a detail, being a section at line 4 a 15 of Fig. 1.7 Fig. 5 is a detail, being a section at line 5 5 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a vertical section similar to Fig. 3, showing a modification.

This invention relates to cash indicators and registers employing a drawer which is unlocked for opening upon the operation of any one of the operating-keys of the machine.

This invention is particularly designed to be applied to an indicator and register of the class shown in Letters Patent to Thomas Oarney, No. 407,815, dated July 30, 1889; but it may be applied to many of the various types of indicators and registers having drawers.

The object of this invention is to provide means for opening the movable cash box or drawer by any one of the various keys, and means for preventing the drawer from being closed until the operated key is returned to its normal position, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings and as hereinafter described.

That which I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, A indicates the frame or casing, which may be made in any suitable form.

B indicates the movable cash box or drawer, and C the door to the fixed cash box. The fixed box is not shown, as it is to be similar to the one shown in the patent above referred to.

D indicates the operatingkeys. Only one is shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 6,as the operation of each of the several keys is the same, one 50 being a duplicate of the others both in convided with inclines b, which run upon rollers struction and operation, and the operation of each key is independent of the others.

E indicates the indicator-operating levers, one of which is connected with each operating-kcy D.

F indicates a number of rods or bars, one of which is connected with each lever E. They may in some instances be connected directly with the operating-keys D.

g is a nose on each of the rods or bars F, adapted to engage with the under rear edge of the drawer or some other part adapted to co -operate therewith when the drawer is closed.

II is a guiding and supporting rod secured 6 5 to the drawer l3.

I is a support for the rod H, secured to the case A and provided with rollers 'L' to engage with the rod II.

J is a catch on the case A.

K is a catch on the drawer I in position to engage with the catch J when the drawer is closed.

The drawer B at its forward edge is pro a in the case A, so that the drawer will open easily, and, if desired, the inclines may cause it to open by gravity. The supporting-rod H is out out at h, so that it can be raised when the drawer is closed, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby permitting the rear of the drawer to be raised or tilted, so as to release the catch K from the catch J.

L is a spring adapted to engage with the catch K and hold it in engagement with the catch J until the drawer is raised, as hereinafter set forth.

M is a guiding and supporting flange for the rods F, secured on the bottomof the case A.

N is a lever pivoted in the frame of the machine and adapted at its lower end to engage with the rear of the drawer B or a block or thereon when the drawer is closed.

P is a spring connected with the lever N for throwing the door O open when the drawer B opens.

When the drawer B is closed, the catch K engages with the catch J, locking the drawer closed, as best shown in Fig. 4. Then the operator pulls any one of the keys D of the machine, the drawer will be lifted or tilted at its rear end, which is raised by the engagement of the nose g until the catch K is released from the catch J, which permits the drawer to be opened or to open automatically. As shown in Fig. 6, the lever F is 0011- nected with a separately-pivoted nose g. This and various other lifting modifications may be employed, and I do not confine my invention to the special devices shown, as the distinctive feature of the invention is the tilting or lifting drawer 13, having a catch thereon, a catch in the case to be engaged by the d rawer-catch, an d a nose-piece connected with a key and engaging with the drawer for tilting or lifting the drawer to release it from the catches when a key is operated.

The drawer, when lifted or tilted, may be opened by hand or thrown open automatically either by a spring or its own gravity.

WVhen one of the keys has been operated, the nose g, which engages with the drawer for opening it, will be elevated above the lower rear edge or part of the drawer with which it engages for opening the drawer. While the nose g remains elevated it will engage with the rear of the drawer, preventing it from being closed till the operated key is returned to its normal position and the engaging-nose g lowered below the lower edge of the rear face of the drawer or the part used to engage with the lifter or nose 9.

The flange M in Figs. 1 t0 5 holds or supports the rods F in the construction there shown, preventing their being forced back by the drawer, while in the construction shown in Fig. 6 the pivoted part of the nose-pieces prevents their being forced backwardly by the closing drawer when one or more of them are elevated.

The nose or part which engages with the drawer may be varied, and I do not limit my invention to the particular form shown, as I may employ any movable device suitably located to engage with the rear end of the drawer or some part connected with the drawer for that purpose when elevated, and any connecting device between the movable nose and an operating-key of a register, whereby when the key is operated the drawer cannot be closed until the key is returned to its normal position.

There are to be as many nose-pieces and intermediate connections as there are operating-keys, by the operation of any one of which the drawer is lifted or tilted.

The registering and indicating mechanism is not fully shown, as any suitable registering mechanism may be connected with or operated by the keys D.

I make no claim to the drawer per 86 or to the means for guiding or supporting the same, or to the means for automatically moving the drawer after it has been raised.

lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In acash-register, the combination, with an operating-key, of a tilting drawer, a catch on the drawer, a catch in the case of the reg ister, and a nose-piece connected with the key and adapted to lift the drawer, substantially as specified.

2. In a cash-register, the combination, with a cash-drawer, of a nose-piece arranged to e11- gage therewith, a connection between each nose-piece, and an operating-key whereby the drawer is prevented from being closed until the operated key is returned to its normal position, substantially as specified.
