To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS EDGAR CLEM- ENT, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Stanstead, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Cash- Re isters; and I do hereby declare that the fol owin is a full, clear, and exact description of t e same.

The present invention relates to improvements in cash registers and it consists of an attachment preferably applied to the front of the drawer and provided with a plurality of keys which bear the different denominations of money, the arrangement being such that the cash drawer cannot be completely opened without pressing downward one of these keys.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device that can be easily applied to a cash register without altering or changing its mechanism and which is entirely independent therefrom.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of simple construction and which can be readily applied, at will to existing cash registers.

The invention will be understood with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which:

In the drawin s, 1 indicates a cash register of the .usua type, for example, that manufactured by National Cash Register Company, provided with a movable drawer 2 which slides in the drawer casing 3, said drawer being provided preferably on one side thereof, in the bottom with a slot 4. 5 is a casing preferably of the same size as the front member of the drawer and adapted to be secured to said drawer member by any suitable means. Said casing 5 is provided with a beveled surface 6 provided with a plurality of holes 7 suitably distanced from one another, and 8 is an inwardly projecting flange provided with holes 9 located equidistantly from one another and in alinement with holes 7. Below said inwardly projecting flange 8 are two parallel inwardly projecting flanges 10 and 11, also provided with holes 12 and 13 which aline with the holes 9 and 7.

Movably secured in each set of holes 7, 9, 12 and 13 is a key 14 provided with the usual head 15- on which is printed or otherwise provided a numeral 16, adapted to correspond with the denomination of a bill, said key having at the lower end of its stem a notch or recess 17 and below which is a tapered portion 18.

A slidable plate 19 is provided in between the flanges 10 and 11, and 20 are a plurality of holes which partially register with the holes 12 and 13 in said flanges. Below said plate 19 at one side thereof is provided a downward projecting lug 21, and 22 is a tension spring secured at one end to said plate 19 and at its other end to the edge of the flange 10.

It will readily be seen that on pressing down one of the keys 14, the tapered end 18 of the key will push the said plate 19 to one side, thereby moving the lug 21 and causing the lever 23 which is fulcrumed at 24 and provided with a beveled lug 25, which contacts with said lug 21 tobe actuated. Then the key is moved downward to such an extent that its notch 17 enters the corresponding hole 20 in the plate 19, the controlling spring 22 will snap said plate back into its former position, thereby locking the key 14 in its depressed position. Each of the keys 14 is provided with a spiral spring 26 around its stem whereby when another key is operated, thekey which is held down, when released from the plate 19, will be brought back to its normal position simultaneously with the operation of another key.

has been explained above, with a beveled lug 25 and below said lug 25, is secured a spiral spring 27 which is secured in between said lever and the bottom of the casing 5, so that when the said lever 23 is actuated by the lug 21 on the plate 19 it will be pushed upward into its normal position. At the other end of said lever 23 is provided a catch element 28 which preferably projects outwardly at a right angle thereto, and so arranged as to normally engage the lower edge of the drawer casing 3. Naturally when the lever 23 is actuated, the catch is lifted out of engagement with the drawer casing 3, and the drawer, being released, will be opened in the usualway.

To better understand the use and operation of the invention, it may be said that the cash register is operated in the usual way, i. e., by pressing the keys to correspond with the amount of the sale. The drawer will be opened say a few inches; that is, the length of the catch element. Immediately after operating the cash register, one of the keys 14 corresponding to the denomination of the bill received in payment of the sale, is depressed thereby releasing the drawer which will be fully opened.

In case two bills of the same denomination are presented to the clerk for payment of successive sales, the operations concerned with the first sale are as above described, the particular unlocking or special key corresponding to the denomination of the bill being depressed to enable the drawer to move outward to fully-open position, as has been explained. This key remains depressed at the completion of the operation and, of course, cannot again be depressed when the second sale takes place; but any one of the other special unlocking keys may, however, be depressed to release the drawer and the key already depressed, the latter serving in such instance as a check upon the clerk to impress upon him the denominational identity of the two bills.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. A device of the character described, in combination with the drawer of a cash register, comprising a casing secured to said drawer, a plurality of denominational keys mounted in said casing, a locking element suitably mounted in said casing adapted to engage one of the sides of the drawer casing and means to operate said locking element whereby the drawer maybe opened substantially as described.

2. A device of the character described, in combination with the drawer of a cash register, comprising a casing secured to said drawer, a plurality of denominational keys movably mounted in said casing, a locking element adapted to engage one of the sides of the drawer casing, a plate slidably and horizontally mounted in said casing, and means, whereby, by pressing on one of said keys the said plate and said locking element will be actuated to "'elease the drawer substantially as described.

A device of the character described in combination with the drawer of a cash register, comprising a casing secured to said drawer, a plurality of movable denominational keys mounted in said casing, a locking element adapted to engage one of the sides of the drawer casing, a plate horizontally movably secured in said casing and having a plurality of holes, and means whereby one of said keys when pressed will actuate said plate and locking element to release the drawer and means to lock saidkey in said plate, and whereby, said key will be released on pressing another 'key substantially as described.

4. A device of the character described, in

combination with the drawer of a cash register, comprising a casing secured to said drawer, a plurality of spring held denominational keys movably mounted in said casing, each of said keys having a dent or slot intermediate of the length of its stem and a beveled lower end, a spring held plate movably secured in said casing,'below the stems of said keys and provided with a plurality of holes adapted to correspond in number to the number of keys, a lever fulcrumed below said plate having at one end a catch adapted to engage the edge of the drawer casing, means whereby when one of said keys is pressed, said plate will be caused to move to and fro and engage said dent or slot on said key, means on said plate to engage said lever whereby said lever will be actuated simultaneously with said plate to unlock the drawer substantially as described.

5. In a cash register, the combination of a drawer adapted to open automatically when a sales key is depressed; means for automatica'lly stopping the drawer in partially-open position; a set of s ecial denominational keys; and means un er the control of all of the special keys for throwing out the stopping means when any special key is operated, to permit the drawer to open fully.

and a slide operable upon the actuation of any one of said keys for releasing said lock to permit movement of the drawer.

14. In a cash register, the combination of a drawer; a lock for holding it against movement; a set of denominational keys and a slide operable upon the actuation of any one of said keys for releasing said lock to permit movement of the drawer, said slide and keys having cooperating means for preventing return movement of the key actuated.

15. In a cash register, the combination of a drawer; a lock for holding it against movement a set of denominational keys;

and a slide operable upon the actuation of any one of said keys for releasing said lock to permit movement of the drawer, said slide and keys having cooperating means acting to prevent return movement of the key actuated and to release that key upon the actuation of a second key.

16. In a cash register, the combination of a drawer; a catch for holding it against movement; a movable plate adapted to engage and release the catch; and a set of denominational keys each having a cam to operatively engage said plate.

17. In a cash register, the combination of a drawer; a catch for holding it against movement; a movable plate having a cam to engage and release the catch; and a set of denominational keys each having a cam to operativelv engage the cam on said plate.
