COMBINED AX, HAMMER, AND MAUL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,894, dated April 29, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES HENRY WIL- LIAMs, of Prin eville,in the county of Crook and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined AX, Hammer, and Maul; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in a combined ax, hammer, and maul; and it consists in the combination of a chisel-shaped blade with a heavy solid portion provided with an eye to receive the handle, and which heavy portion is provided with recesses in opposite sides, so as to adapt it for use as a maul, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a perspective of an ax which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

A represents a thin chisel-like blade for .cutting and splitting wood, and which is secured to the body B at its inner edge in the usual manner. The inner end of the body, where it is jointed to the inner end of the blade, is shaped so as to form abrupt shoulders (J, which are to be used in splitting rails and wood of all kinds. The thin chisel-like blade A penetrates the wood until the shoulders are reached, when the shoulders abruptly force the two parts of the wood apart for the purpose of separating them. The body B is formed of a suitable length, width, and thickness, and its outer end D is adapted for use as a hammer. In opposite sides of this body are formed circular recesses G, which adapt the implement to be used as a maul in driving wedges. These recesses are made saucer-shaped, as shown, so that in driving the wedges their heads are compressed by the concave sides of the recesses, instead of being flattened or split, as is the case where they are struck by the flat sides of the art. Through the body is formed an eye, through which the handle is passed in the usual manner; also, through the body above the eye is made a hole or opening I, which servesto prevent the metal from splitting or breaking by allowing it to give at this point. This opening gives the metal just enough elasticity at this point to prevent the heavy blows upon the surface D from splitting or breaking the like an ordinary ax, for splitting rails, for being used as a hammer for driving objects of diiferent kinds, and as a maul, as may be desired. The body B will be given a sufficient weight to enable great force to be given to the blows either while cutting wood or while being used as a hammer or a maul.

Having thus described my invention, I claim An implement composed of a chisel-like blade A and a body B, the body being provided with abrupt shoulders and recesses in its sides, substantially as shown and described.
