Description

SYLVESTER LEWIS, OF ROOHESTERNE W YORK.
"apeeveem'm' esooomzme PETROLEUM, etc.
' Specification tbrniing part of Letters iatent meager. dated May 10,1864.
To .azzmm it (imam: g a Be it known that I, SYLVESTEB. Lewis, of
- Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful mode ,or process of deodorizing petroleum and kerosene oils, naphtha, benzole, and benzine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description thereof;
I take any kind of tub or leach about four feet long and from one to two feet in diameter,
or of any other shape or size which the con-.
veniences or' exigencies of business may suggest. I then fill the tub or leach to within .one-third of the top with ashes and charcoal,
in thefollowing proportions, to wit: one quart of charcoal pulverized to one bushel of ashes either of wood or coal, the said ashes and char coal being either mixed or a layer of charcoal being laid in the above proportion over the ashes" I-then fill'the tub or leach with the oil,
naphtha, benzole, or benzine to be deodorized, and filter'it in the ordinary way through the ingredients above named. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use and applicatiomof the above ingredients-to wit, ashes and charcoal-for the purpose of deodorizing petroleum and kerosene oils, naphtha, henzole, and benziue, and the process of filtering the same through the above ingredients,-as above set forth, without reference to the exact proportions of such ingredients, which varysomewhat, depending upon the state of the oil to be deodorized.
v I SYLVESTER LEWIS.
In presence ot'- Geo. H. H MPHREY,
JAY HYATT.
