Description

(No Model.) 2 Sheets-Sheei 1. A. F. HASSELSTROM.
POCKET KNIFE.
No. 426,445. Patented Apr. 29, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AXEL F. I-IASSELSTROM, OF HERMOSA, (DAKOTA TERRITORY,) SOUTH DAKOTA.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,445, dated April 29, 1890.
Application filed July 2'7, 1889- Serial No. 318,919. (No model.)
To all whom it -may concern.-
Be it known that I, AXEL F. HASSELSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hermosa, in the county of Ous'ter and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain features in the construction of a pocket-knife and it consists of certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed, the object of which is to produce a knife the blade of which may be locked both when closed and open, thereby producing an article of safety and convenience. This result I attain by means of the following-described construction of the several parts necessary to form a knife, reference being had to the-accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inner sides of the two handles. Fig. 2 is a view of each side of the blade. Fig. 3 is a perspective outside view of one of the handles. Fig. lis a top and side View of the detachable end and spring connected thereto. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of all of the parts forming a knife separated from each other ready for being fitted together. Fig. 6 is a front view of the knife closed and open.
The upper side of the handles A A are cut away one-half around the rivet-hole E, so as to leave a semicircle above such hole, while projecting from the sides of the blade are the lugs GandFon a line with each other and the rivet-hole, parallel with the blade. One of said lugs G projects from the blade side of the rivet-hole while the other lug F is on the other side of said hole, both being so arranged that they will follow the periphery of one of the semicircles on the handles above referred to.
Spring B indicates the back spring of the knife, which is made in the usual manner, except that it is permanently secured to but one of 'the handles and has projecting near its larger end and from its free side the staple I), intended to coincide in shape and position with hole a to be made in the other handle,
such hole being for the purpose of receiving such staple when the handles are secured together.
The tip D corresponds in position with the usual ornamental tip placed upon the buttend of the handles, though it is not permanently secured to such handle, but is held in place by means of the spring a, which enters a longitudinal slot provided in the buttend of the handles, as shown in Fig. 5, far enough to pass beyond the hole a, above referred to, provided, as stated, for receiving the staple h. This spring (shown in Fig. l) is so bent at its detached end that it will freely enter the slot provided in the handle and pass through the staple b, the upper bend in same passing barely through the upper part of such staple, and by such means is held in place and at the same time connects the handles together.
The different parts of the knife, as described, are combined together, as shown in Fig. 6, and it will be seen that the lug Fprojects from the left side of the blade above the rivet 0, while the lug G projects from the right side of such blade below the rivet-hole. This refers to the knife when closed.
In operation, when it is desired to open the knife, the tip D, with the spring attached to same, is withdrawn, thereby releasing the staple b, when the handles may be separated at their larger ends sufficiently to release such staple from the hole (L. Then the left handle (shown in Fig. 6) may be raised at its larger end and moved entirely around upon the axis formed by the rivet of the blade. It will be seen that when the handle is moving in the manner indicated the periphery of the semicircle is traversed by the lug F until such cam-guide reaches the other and inner side of such semicircle, when the blade is raised by the guide coming in contact with the handle as the handle gradually passes around to its place; and when the hole a in the handle is opposite the staple b the handles may be closed. The spring or, attached to the tip, may be inserted in the slot passing through the staple, thus securely holding the handles in position. When it is desired to close the knife the tip D with its attached spring, may be removed, releasing, as before stated, the handles, so that they may be separated at their larger ends sufficiently to disengage the staple from the hole a. The disengaged handle may reverse the movement just described. Then the handle is half-Way around or is parallel with the blade, the lug F again traverses the periphery of the semicircle, when it engages With the handles on the outer side of such circle, thereby forcing the blade to close as the handle is gradually brought around into its position, When it may be again secured by the insertion of the spring c".
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved knife herein described and shown, consisting of the handles pivoted together and provided on their inner sides concentrically with their pivot with semicircular recesses, one of the handles being further provided with a longitudinal slot and a transverse opening, the blade mounted on the pivot of the handles and provided on its opposite faces and on opposite sides of its pivot with lateral lugs engaging the semicircular recesses in the handles, the spring B, secured to one of the handles, the staple projecting from said spring through the transverse openingin the handle, the removable tip on the end of the said handle, and the spring secured to said tip, adapted to enter the longitudinal slot in the handle, and provided at its free end with a lateral bend adapted to pass through the staple and engage thefinner side of the same, as specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
O. J. PATTON, LARKIN B. RANDALL.
