To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. HART, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Lubricators; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to im provements on lubricators for shaft and other bearings; and its consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and dcscri bed, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved lubricator. Fig.2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same in line 00 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan. Fig. 4': is an elevation of the upper portionof the device, portions being in section. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional elevation of the central portion of the cap B.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
The object of my present invention is the production of a simple and efficient lubricating oil-cup for shaft and other bearings in which the flow of the lubricant shall be capable of being started and stopped by simply turning a handle, and in which the amount of lubricant to be delivered to such bearings maybe adjusted by turning a button. To accomplish this result, 1 construct my lubricator of a bottom piece A and a top piece B, a glass cylinder C being interposed between the said top and bottom pieces to produce a chamber D for the reception of the liquid lubricant to be introduced through an opening I) in said top piece. The bottom piece A, which, as well as the top piece B and the cylinder O, are circular in contour, but may also be of any other desirable contour, has on its lower side an externally screw-threaded projection or boss a, wherewith engages the stem E, the lowerend of which (2 may be left blank or externally screw-threaded for attachment of the device to that portion of a machine, 850., in connection with which it is to be used. This stcm has, to enable its being screwed into such bearing, a hexagonal wrenclrsection c, in the usual manner. It has, furthermore, in its body openings 6', lined with glass, through which the flow of the lubricant may be observed in a manner readily comprehended. The bottom piece A has centrally and upwardly projecting a tubular portion F, the upper end of which is screw threaded at f, to engage an internally-screw-threaded downwardly-projecting tube B on the top piece B, whereby these two pieces are secured together with the glass cylinder 0 between them, leather, rubber, cork, or other washers d d being interposed between the parts mentioned to produce tight joints. The top piece B has, furthermore, an upwardly-project ng externally-screw-threaded boss g, wherewlth engages a nut g to retain in sliding contact a cover-plate G to close the filling-opening I), already mentioned. The upper edge of the projection g is notched in diametrically-opposite places, as shown at h h, to engage the projecting points 2' of a lever I, in a manner hereinafter to be referred to.
IVithin the tubular projection B is placed a shouldered tube K, passing through the upper projection g and loosely receiving the lever I, a locking nut or collar L being-secured to the upper .end of the tube K to retain the lover I in position and to act as an abutment for the same. Within the shouldered tube K as well as the tubular projection F of the bottom piece A is placed a valve-spindleN, having a screw-threaded portion n engaging the shouldered tube K, and a valve-point n on its lower end bearing upon a suitable valveseat in the projection a, a passage 0' 0 leading from the chamber D through the bottom piece and boss a and terminating in a nozzle P, as clearly shown in the figures. The valve-spindle N has a sidewise-projecting pin 7t, operating within a slot 7.; in the tube F, to prevent it from turning.
The operation of this device is substantially as follows: Assuming the reservoir D to be filled with a liquid lubricant, the valve-rod down so that the valve-point it bears upon its seat to prevent the oil from escaping through its passages 0 0, to start the lubricator the lever I, the pointed projections z of which have been engaging the notches h in the upper projection g, is to be turned one-fourth of a revolution so as to cause the said points i to rest in the notches h, thus lifting the shouldered tube K with its valve-rod N, and thereby to open the passage 0' and to allow the lubricant to escape from the nozzle P, which may be observed through the openings 6" in the shank e.
To regulate the amount of liquid passing through the nozzle, the nut or button L on the upper end of the shouldered tube K is revolved in the proper direction, thereby raising or lowering the valve-spindle N, as the case may be, by the screw-threaded portion at.
To stop the flow of liquid, the lever I, by its handle I, is again turned one-fourth of a revolution, which will cause the pointed to drop into the deeper notches h, a spiral spring R, located in the tubular projection B and bearing upon the shoulder 7a" of the tube K, pressing it downward and thereby holding its valve-rod down upon its seat.
It will now be readily observed that the advantages of this device as compared with similar patented devices of my own invention,,as'
Well as others, are simplicity of construction and efficiency of operation. The valve-rod protruding, the shouldered tube is in plain sight, so that when adjustment is being made by turning the button its action maybe plainly seen, so that errors of manipulation may be avoided.
The entire apparatus is preferably made of brass. It can be polished, plated, and ornamented in keeping with the present requirements of the trade, and its parts are such as to allow of ready production by the present system of multiplication of parts.
Having thus fully described-my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent 1. As an inproved article of manufacture,
a lubricating oil-cup having metallic top and bottom pieces and an interposed glass cylinder, a valve-rod having a screw-threaded portion engaging a shouldered tube, said tube having a button on its upper end serving as an abutment for an operating-lever provided with points engaging notches in the upper end of the top piece, substantially as described.
2. In lubricators, the combination, with the top piece B, having centrally a downwardlyprojecting tube and an upwardly-pro ecting tubular boss, of avalve -spindle having a screwthreaded portion, a shouldered tube fitting said downwardly-projecting tube and provided on its upper end with a button and adapted to engage the screw-threaded portion ofsaidvalve-spindle,aspringwithin saiddownwardly-projecting tube and acting upon said shouldered tube, and mechanism, substantially as described, for raising said shouldered tube, whereby said valve-spindle may be vertically adjusted by turning said button and raised and lowered by said mechanism and spring, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A lubricating oil-cup consisting, essentially, of a bottom piece having a nozzle and shank, and an inner upwardly-proj ecting slotted tube provided with passages and a valveseat, a top piece having a tubular downwardlyprojecting boss engaging said upper projection on the bottom piece, a cylindrical shell interposed between said top and bottom pieces, a shouldered tube and spiral spring,
a valve-rod in said shouldered tube, and a lever having points and revolving upon said shouldered tube and bearing against an abutment, said shouldered tube being-adapted to be revolved by said button or abutment, as and for the purpose stated.
